The vision of life and death in Gloomy Eyes is poetic. There is no horror or blood, but rather a reflection on what it means to exist at the extremes. Gloomy and Nena do not fight monsters, but rather oblivion, prejudice, and despair.

Gloomy Eyes offers a lovingly crafted and unique gameplay experience, with its 'solo coop' mechanics offering clever puzzles that never present you with tasks that are too difficult to solve. A little more polished gameplay wouldn't have been a bad thing though, especially since you're constantly having to take the same route twice with both characters again and again.

Gloomy Eyes feels like a playable Burton short film with enough challenge and heart to stand tall as a great little puzzle-adventure game. It’s not perfect; some puzzles drag, and navigation can sometimes get muddled, but the art style, storytelling, and atmosphere make it a standout experience that’s hard not to fall in love with, especially for anyone with a love of the weird, the charmingly creepy, and the delightfully dark.

Gloomy Eyes’ wonderful presentation, endearing storytelling, and engaging dual-character puzzling ensure that it shines brightly in a world of eternal night. Sure, it has a few small flaws, but when everything else comes together so wonderfully, it’s hard to not find yourself absolutely hooked into this dark yet heart-warming tale.

Overall, Gloomy Eyes was a treasure of a game. It had a great story, amazing aesthetics, and a great soundtrack. It was a little short, and I feel like it could have been expanded a bit at the end to make the last cutscene a little less abrupt, but overall, the story and characters were amazing. If you like spooky Tim Burton kids’ movies like Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline, and you even thought, “Hey these could make a fun game,” you should check out Gloomy Eyes for sure.

Who would have thought that a little co-op puzzle platformer that I demo’ed at a gaming convention would truly deliver such a powerful punch in such a small package! Gloomy Eyes was a complete joy to experience and left me wanting to see more of this tiny little macabre world. If you like the concept of a spooky (yet cozy) solo-player co-op game, you owe it to yourself to add Gloomy Eyes to your game library.
