Critic Reviews for Star Trek: Voyager - Across the Unknown

For resource management and survival nuts who like a bit of '90s Trek, this feels like a homecoming. Be warned: Star Trek: Voyager - Across the Unknown is a suitably stressful, gruelling journey that'll stretch your abilities and send you, repeatedly, battered and bruised to sickbay. Steer well clear if planning ahead and strategising your way out of tricky situations by the skin of your teeth isn't your forte. It's not without rough edges, either, but it's lovingly presented and the systems beneath are robust. Those who don't get teary-eyed from a few bars of Jerry Goldsmith can knock a point off the score below. For Trekkies with determination and grit, though, this is a hell of a time. To the journey.

Star Trek: Voyager - Across the Unknown is a text and story-heavy trek that follows the story of Voyager as it returns from the Delta Quadrant, but allowing you to change the events of the story in a game that has impactful choices wrapped around an FTL-style survival game and copious amounts of resource management. Not a masterpiece, the sum feels like more than the whole, though I will admit my view may be clouded as a fan of Star Trek, Voyager, and the genre.

Star Trek Voyager – Across the Universe isn’t going to win any awards for presentation or technical polish. But what it does do right is capture the feeling of commanding a lone Starfleet ship far from home, help and allies. It makes players struggle with if the needs of the many, do in fact outweigh the needs of the few. And honestly, for a lifelong Star Trek fan who never quite fell head over heels with Voyager… that might be the biggest compliment I can give it.

This is perhaps the Star Trek game most faithful to its source material, as just like Star Trek: Voyager, it’s a flawed gem that I can heartily recommend experiencing, just not without caveats. Both its greatest strength and biggest weakness is that it really feels like the kind of PC game that could’ve come out during the later years of the show’s run.

The Voyager crew are highly motivated to return to their loved ones on Earth, and you are provided with the necessary tools to help them achieve this. While it's a long journey, it's an exciting one, filled with tension, strategic decisions and the fight for survival in the uncharted depths of space.

Despite its flaws, Star Trek: Voyager - Across the Unknown is a fun and unique resource management sim. At first, I wasn't keen on the battles and the lack of voice acting leaves a lot to be desired but I eventually found myself addicted to this trek through the Delta Quadrant. 🖖

Space may be the final frontier, but this game clearly needed one more trip through QA. The combat rarely clicks, and the voice acting and animation struggle to keep pace, yet the resource management is sublime and the UI design genuinely excellent. Focus on its strategic and narrative strengths, and this Trekkie adventure might still live long and prosper in memory.

I enjoyed playing this game, especially since I didn't have much prior experience with the series. The multiple choices and actions made it feel like my decisions were truly my own, without the pressure to play exactly as the captain would.
