While I love the idea of experiencing the world of God of War in other styles and genres, Sons of Sparta is somewhat disappointing. It's a fun adventure with some great moments, but it suffers from major problems due to its unbalanced combat system, numerous bugs, jerky animations, and a story that never finds its footing despite having interesting ideas that explore the darker aspects of Spartan martial culture.

Sons of Sparta ends up as an uneven effort that falls short in both story and gameplay. Neither a compelling spin-off nor a satisfying side-scrolling action title, it struggles under the weight of the God of War name and never quite lives up to it.

Sons of Sparta feels unnecessary, a prequel few expected and one that adds little to the wider God of War saga. Still, on its own merits, it’s polished and impressive, with strong mechanics, striking visuals, and standout voice work. More indulgent side story than essential chapter, but a solid one nonetheless.

"A unique experience in the God of War universe" God of War: Sons of Sparta offers an innovative side experience in the God of War universe, focusing on the humanity and emotional narrative of Kratos, with complex boss battles and meticulously crafted exploration. Despite the limitations of the visual style and the repetition of some enemies, the game provides an enjoyable experience for fans of Metroidvania and the series alike, with excellent Arabic localization and voice acting.

God of War: Sons of Sparta is a good Metroidvania game. Solid, consistent, respectful. But also cautious. Too cautious to aspire to anything more. It doesn't redefine the subgenre. It doesn't establish itself as a new benchmark. And at this point, reflection becomes inevitable. Is an experiment like this, perhaps imperfect, better than yet another live service project designed to chase the market and then, perhaps, be canceled? Is a “small” God of War that tries to explore different territories better than the total absence of the brand while waiting for a bigger chapter? At the same time, it is legitimate to wonder whether a name like God of War deserved a more ambitious, more refined, more courageous production. Between black and white, in short, there are many shades of gray. Sons of Sparta is exactly there, and for us, that's fine. It's a good product that demonstrates how, on that fine line between rigor and limitation, moderation can become a virtue: essential, disciplined... Spartan. In the positive sense of the term.

Halfway through the game, I stopped comparing it to the big God of War entries and just let it be what it is; that helped a lot. Some fights could’ve hit harder. A few bosses are cool in the moment but don’t really stick. The map made me circle back more than once, wondering if I missed something obvious. And yet… I kept going. It’s not spectacular. It’s not one of those “you have to play this” entries in the franchise. But it’s a solid, surprisingly thoughtful Metroidvania with Kratos at the center, and once I met it on its own terms, I genuinely enjoyed my time with it.

God of War: Sons of Sparta might bring fans back to Greece, but it isn't the way you expected to return. Ghost of Sparta did a fine job of filling in Kratos' backstory before his reign of chaos. Sons of Sparta muddies the past while revisiting a time in Kratos' life that few fans care about.

It has some real issues as a whole, but I really enjoyed my time with God of War: Sons of Sparta. Mega Cat Studios did an admirable job translating the God of War experience into a Metroidvania. It’s nowhere near as fast-paced as any of its AAA entries, but I thought the story they told and the game’s end was a nice mix of what we’ve seen from the series in the past and the present day. That said, slow pacing and fluff really prevent this from being a wholehearted recommendation, especially with it’s $30 asking price when far superior titles can be had for much less.

And while it’s an okay game, this road has been well trodden in the genre and done with more surprise and addictiveness.

With a sea of new, genre-defining games constantly coming in, God of War: Sons of Sparta gets lost in the tide.

God of War: Sons of Sparta is a bold move by Sony to diversify its offering within the God of War IP and bring in more fans (especially casual fans), but it fails to meet the quality bar most modern games are measured against. Santa Monica Studios was present merely in an “overseer” capacity for this game, so that does make me believe that the God of War remakes will have some juice in them. Overall, the game feels uninspiring, lazy, and quite dated for a title released in 2026.

God of War Sons of Sparta swaps to a 2D plane to show us a glimpse of Kratos's early years.

God of War: Sons of Sparta balances ambition and restraint, limited at times but capable of offering a surprisingly human take on Kratos. Its metroidvania structure isn’t groundbreaking, yet it’s solid, with satisfying combat and a world full of secrets. It’s not a grand new chapter—just an honest, imperfect spin‑off crafted with care. Seen as a pixel‑art coming‑of‑age tale about a young Spartan, it becomes a warm, unexpectedly resonant adventure that leaves a deeper mark than its modest scope suggests.

God of War: Sons of Sparta serves as a strong, mechanically solid introduction to the Metroidvania genre, competently handling all the fundamentals. However, the game ultimately falls short of being memorable, as it never attempts to innovate or push the boundaries beyond the basics.

God of War Sons of Sparta is a decent game overall. It’s interesting to see the canon representation of Kratos by Mega Cat Studios, hearing the voice actors from the original trilogy, and seeing the game in its 3rd genre: a 2D metroidvania. While it didn’t fully deliver to my satisfaction, I enjoyed my time with the game at the beginning though my enjoyment waned towards the end. It’s a decent game to sink time into while waiting for the newly announced God of War trilogy remake, though not necessarily required to rush and play it.

God of War: Sons of Sparta doesn't colour outside of the lines and bring anything new to its 2D Metroidvania style, but it's a fun platformer that plays it safe and adds another layer of depth to Kratos' character.

God of War: Sons of Sparta is unfortunately neither a good God of War spin-off nor a good Metroidvania, and it also locks the otherwise appealing local multiplayer behind a generic dungeon that only becomes available after completing the main story. Anyone who doesn’t feel the need to play everything even remotely related to God of War should probably skip this title entirely.

God of War Sons of Sparta has a weak start, solid middle, and strong ending. If you can get through a tedious first few hours you will eventually be rewarded with solid combat and an emotional story.
