Critic Reviews for Bonnie Bear Saves Frogtime

There is a lot to enjoy in Bonnie Bear Saves Frogtime; the Frogtime game is the absolute highlight. It’s clear the developers had lots of fun creating the game, doing the voices, and creating all the songs. For me, a quick replay option for the Frogtime battles and the ability to skip through the conversation or songs would have elevated the enjoyment of Bonnie Bear Saves Frogtime. However, I’ll be humming the Rik Spek theme tune for a long while, and that’s not a bad thing!

Bonnie Bear Saves Frogtime is a refreshing palette cleanser. It’s a game that doesn’t take itself seriously but takes its message of self-love very seriously. The Frogtime battle mechanics are surprisingly deep and I’m very excited to keep pulling from Booster Eggs to try and get a super rare Colossal Frog and make it to the top of the Battle Tower. It’s weird, it’s musical, and it’s deeply charming.

There are a few minor issues here and there, but they don’t sour the gameplay experience to a fault.

You never know who (or what) you’ll be playing Frogtime against, but it’s the engine that drives the funky comedic trip that is Bonnie Bear Saves Frogtime. It’s off-kilter, made from a place of surely beautiful personalities, and always runs parallel to a feeling of community and friendship.

Bonnie Bear Saves Frogtime really showcases Bonte Avond’s elevation in game making, as it’s a massive step up from their previous games. This frog-obsessed world comes to life through its playful writing and bright, colourful visuals. It features a strongly designed strategy game with fun mechanics that fits well into the main game and, behind the jokes, puns and songs, features a narrative that many will resonate with. With a bunch of characters I want as my friends, Bonnie Bear turned out to be so much more than I expected and an experience I won’t forget anytime soon.
