Critic Reviews for Defend Your Crypt

Although we're certainly in the company of undead kings, Defend Your Crypt doesn't have grand ambitions. Instead it aims to deliver a solid puzzle title with a unique twist on the tried and tested 'tower-defense' formula. The Egyptian setting alone is something you don't often see from the perspective of an undead Pharaoh, so while the gameplay is slightly repetitious there's still enough here to justify giving it a shot. We'd steer slightly towards the 3DS version due to it suiting shorter-form gameplay sessions more, but either option is a safe bet if you're looking for a neat puzzler to try out for a few hours. Rise from your grave....and defend it!

Defend Your Crypt is a puzzle/strategy game that, even though it is not a game meant for everyone, those who like challenging games will enjoy a lot of hours of gameplay fighting the intruders of the pyramid.

And now, let’s talk about the differences between the Wii U and the 3DS versions of Defend your Crypt. Gameplay is fundamentally the same in both versions, and the TV on the Wii U is pretty much just a display of what you’re doing on the Wii U GamePad where you have to focus as you play. Defend Your Crypt looks much better on the Wii U Gamepad than on the 3DS since it’s shown at a higher resolution. The 3DS version does not use the 3D effect, so you can’t activate it at all. Overall they’re both great and very fun, so you should pick the one you want. Do you do most of your gaming at home? Then get the Wii U version. Do you game on the go? Then add this very fun digital game to your 3DS collection.

In a fair, yet plausible attempt to establish which kind of audience Defend Your Crypt seems targeted at - or more appropriate to recommend to - it's honestly quite difficult to go beyond those who want to try every single decent-to-good puzzle game available on their 3DS systems. The inherent simplicity of its core mechanics is at the same time a quality and a limit, and while it's perfect for short bursts - making the 3DS its ideal home - monotony lurks in the depths of this crypt during more prolonged play sessions.

In its current state, I only saw myself playing short sessions before moving on to other games. All in all, I would recommend it more if you want to play it on the Nintendo 3DS. That is where the game shines the most.
