Loot Rascals is a bit of a frustrating package because the core concept is so damn interesting and well done, it’s just everything that surrounds it that sours the experience.

It's a blast to play and I absolutely loved it.

Loot Rascals, like other roguelikes, might not be for everyone, but it is the game's charm and engaging approach to stat loadout and item management (as dull as that sounds) that make it enjoyable and helps turn what otherwise might have been frustration into a learning experience. Ultimately you might not get very far, but you won’t regret the time spent trying.

While the gameplay is solid and the visuals interesting, it’s not engrossing enough to overcome the continuous repetitious need to start from scratch.

In the end, I found myself falling in love with Loot Rascals‘ stunning visuals and it’s punishing gameplay.

Loot Rascals is a quirky, unique roguelike that manages to simplify the genre without taking away the strategic bits that make roguelikes so much fun. My only major issue with it is that it lacks the level of variety that is really required for maximum replayability.

A great title for the genre and definitely worth the investment.

When taking just a look at Loot Rascals, it may come across as familiar to some and simply intriguing to others. Some will recognize the art style from Adventure Time while others, like me, will appreciate the combination of colors as they explore the randomness of the hexagonal moon that they find themselves on. Why is your character on some random moon? Because it apparently got in the way of a new resort / camp that a robot was sent to go set up. This results in your goal to get the "Liquid Anything" that it was transporting back to finish construction.

Loot Rascals is a game that oozes charm and character. It features bright and vibrant visuals with excellent character design and a soundtrack that fits perfectly. But behind that cute exterior is a very challenging game that will test your skills to their fullest. If you’re up for the challenge, be sure to give this one a try on PS4!

With a deeper sense of strategy than most games of its kind, Loot Rascals might just be the thinking man's roguelike you've been waiting for. Although slow and steady, it offers a lot to love.

Loot Rascals is a very fun implementation of the roguelike formula to a charming and colorful release. The quirky art style and character design are perfect for the game’s gameplay mechanics, and its soundtrack perfectly fits the game. This is a very addictive release that will keep you busy for many hours. It happened to me the first time I played it – before I noticed I had already spent four hours playing! I liked my time with the game so much that I’ve continued to go back to it even after writing this review, and that greatly speaks to the quality of this release.

I really liked a lot of things about Loot Rascals but it’s just a shame that luck plays a factor too often. The art style is colorful and charming, the gameplay is easy to learn but has a lot of depth to it along with player freedom and the procedural generation keeps things fresh. The whole card system is really cool but I just found myself getting frustrated that they weren’t dropping often enough to give me a chance of making it to the next level. The time limit on turns makes it so you can’t even work as long as you might need to powering yourself up to give you a fair shot as well. I really think Hollow Pond did mostly right here but some refinements could be made to make Loot Rascals really special.

Perhaps it is the requirement of balance that made me love a game with such randomness behind it, as balancing my turns or the cards made me feel powerful in a world of beautiful chaos. I think Loot Rascals actually taught me something, which isn't something I say often about video games.

Luckily, Loot Rascals is so charming that the permadeath is much less of a frustration than it is in most roguelikes. The world is bright and colorful, and there’s always a collection of new, laughably weird monsters to battle. Many of the cards you pick up are humorous too like a salt sock that prevents you from slipping on ice or an inflatable pool toy for a weapon. The game is like a cartoon version of Red Dwarf by way of Adult Swim.

One of the dozens similar small titles which quickly grows monotonous. There were some good ideas, but the developer didn't manage to fulfill its potential.

Loot Rascals is a neat variation of roguelikes with a charming, oddball style that's unfortunately marred by an over-reliance on luck and frustrating difficulty spikes.
