Dark Souls on Switch was another chance for me to fall in love with the world of Lordran once more. It's an experience that's a perfect fit on a handheld, and it's one of the most compelling apps Nintendo's burgeoning platform currently has to offer.

While we've had to wait a little longer than those playing on PS4 and Xbox One, the wait has been more than worth it. Dark Souls: Remastered is a faithful remaster of a touchstone in video game design that improves overall performance while preserving all of the character traits that made the original such a memorable experience. While it's no less forgiving - and its menus are a little fiddly - this slick Nintendo Switch iteration offers the only way to experience Lordran's ultra-challenging odyssey in true handheld form. Praise the Sun, indeed.

Dark Souls remastered on Nintendo Switch is still a fantastic game. And with good technical and visual performances, that version has one killer feature that other versions doesn't : portability !

Dark Souls is one of the most important and powerful games ever made. Switch is the least pleasant place to play it. It works—this is still Dark Souls and Dark Souls is still very good—but sacrifices in presentation and control scream inferiority next to original and Remastered editions of the same game.

The Switch version may not have all the pretty bells and whistles that you find on its big brother consoles or the PC but it fulfills a sense of nostalgia for the original that the others didn’t. Maybe it was the 30fps lock or downplayed graphics but the Switch’s Dark Soul feels more authentic in nearly every way and marks another outstanding port to the Switch lineup.

If you're someone who has already played Dark Souls on console or PC, the experience will not really differ in docked mode but being able to take the game anywhere, may provide you with some newer Dark Souls memories.

The Switch release of Dark Souls: Remastered is sublime, offering a daunting, rewarding experience that you can carry anywhere with no losses. That you can play it in such an intimate way only enhances its themes and its best points, becoming, to me, the definitive way to experience Dark Souls.

If you’re searching for a real challenge on Switch and haven’t played the original before, look no further than Dark Souls: Remastered. It’s going to be a daunting yet thrilling ride filled with frustrations along the way, but satisfying nonetheless in the end. Just be extremely patient, learn from your mistakes and you’ll eventually feel right at home.

All in all, Dark Souls: Remastered on the Switch is a solid port that presents a modern classic to a new audience. While this version is an overall good showing, it falls short in sound quality and lacks any significant improvements over the original. Most will get this for the sake of playing Dark Souls in the restroom, and there is no valid argument I can bring against that.

Dark Souls Remastered on Nintendo Switch may be lacking in the same bells and whistles as its current gen counterparts, but that is hardly a bad thing. As a result of the Switch port taking a more reserved approach, due to technical limitations or otherwise, Dark Souls' visual identity has been kept intact. Audio compression does plague the port, but the main game itself is virtually untouched. While this may not result in a definitive version, the Switch port makes for an excellent return, or even first visit, to Lordran. Dark Souls remains a magnificently designed title with a strong visual and narrative sense of self. There was no reason to fix what wasn't broken, and Dark Souls Remastered on Switch understands that perfectly.

Dark Souls Remastered is a title little renewed in the formula and content practically identical to the original. It has been designed for those who still play a lot of the original edition today, making substantial changes to the online component. We admit with joy that it makes a certain effect to play wherever you want with a Dark Souls title thanks to its landing on Nintendo Switch, which can enjoy an excellent conversion that has nothing to envy to the editions for PS4 and Xbox One. Arm yourself with a lot of patience and leave for Lordran!

Dark Souls seems pretty at home on the Switch (which all up is not a particularly surprising conclusion to come to since this console launched with a Zelda title, and Dark Souls is basically Zelda but difficult… Haha, don't look at me like that, I'm kidding. No really). Should you pay full price to get it, though? I don't know. It apparently costs the same on PC at the moment too, and if you're strictly comparing the two options, well, Switch seems like a smart one. I don't know if Dark Souls on Switch is the most Dark Souls version of Dark Souls, but it sure gives you a lot of options as to how you want to suffer through it.
