eFootball PES 2020 is a confusing title to recommend. It's best likened to an Alfa Romeo as, when everything works, it's majestic. However, when it's not, which is most of the time, it's such a frustrating experience because you know just how good it could be.

In the annual football sim faceoff, fans of Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer have always hung their scarves on the idea that PES is far superior on the pitch than monied rival FIFA.

EFootball PES 2020 is a game with moments as great as its gameplay while also having aspects as awful as its new name.

What's in a name? For eFootball PES 2020, it's just words. Even with the new moniker, this year's footballing title offers more of the same - mostly solid gameplay, but lacking any sort of forward momentum in all other areas.

PES 2020 takes one step forward and two steps back in its latest entry as impressive animation and new licensing is overshadow by the same old frustrations.

PES 2020 is an accomplished football sim, but the same could be said for PES 2019, and the changes Konami has made this year don't amount to much. As such, if you already have last year's game, I find it a little hard to recommend getting PES 2020 as well.

eFootball PES 2020 won't convince any FIFA fans over to Konami's side, but it will certainly appease those who are already enthralled with Master League and myClub. There really isn't too much to write home about this year, but when the gameplay is this enjoyable, there's hardly any reason to complain.

eFootball PES 2020 may be a symbolic start of a new era for Konami, but it feels like not much has changed over last year's version of the game. In fact, it might even be that last year's version plays a shade better compared to this version. When PES 2020 works properly it is sublime, but issues on the pitch need addressed to really be considered worth upgrading.

PES started the eighth generation awfully. PES 2015 is probably one of the worst sports games I've ever played. But the PES team has come a long way since then and has overcome many problems. License issues still persist, the gameplay is not perfect and still lacking in ambition and goodwill, but PES 2020 still has the spirit of football. As someone who plays both PES and FIFA every year, I have to say that PES 2020 is a good game, and of course, I hope the creators don't do that and fix the weaknesses with more effort.

eFootball PES2020 is more than a rebrand that goes skin deep. The game has received a level of polish and refinement that the franchise has needed for years.

On the pitch, as always, Konami almost gets it bang on with eFootball PES 2020, but off the pitch it's seriously lacking in the balance and depth department.

Sublime physical football with a tactical brain sees PES 2020 bring a successful gameplay refresh, but far more needs to be done about the list of problems that have been left untouched for much of this generation.

eFootball PES 2020 has gameplay that feels much more realistic, and each game is more about careful approaches than counter attacks. Most of the modes remain relatively unchanged, but the actual game is lots of fun to play as long as you're not having issues with the AI.

Grittier and more convincing than ever, Konami's soccer juggernaut excels on the pitch but barely tries off it.

eFootball PES 2020 is spinning it's wheels this year again with no groundbreaking additions to existing modes like it's predecessor and doesn't manage to provide enough incentive over the rest of the game to let FIFA finally lie in the shelf for once.

There’s a lot to like here and on the pitch, Pro Evolution is easily one of the best football simulators on the market. In terms of polish, the game suffers from some aesthetically janky menus and a cumbersome team management screen. The loading times are a little too long, especially during on-pitch breaks like throw ins and corners, while the commentary is pretty woeful all round. Compared to FIFA though, Pro Evo is all about performance, rather than aesthetic, and where it really matters, the game absolutely delivers.

It was a strange decision for me to finally move on from Fifa over to PES as I said previously, I have been playing the Fifa series since 1994. But I know a 100% I have made the right decision. Fifa has in my opinion been a reskin of the same game for a number of years and quite frankly, there is nothing exciting about it anymore. If it wasn’t for “The Journey” mode, I would have moved over to PES a few years earlier. I am not the only one either. Reading a lot of the buzz on the internet & comments in forums, there’s a hell of a lot of people switching over too. All in all, I am extremely extremely impressed with eFootball PES 2020. Yes there are some irregularities in the game but Konami are already on top of these issues. The future for eFootball PES 2020 looks very exciting & I am glad to finally be a part of it. I am awarding eFootball PES 2020 a Thumb Culture Gold Award.

eFootball PES 2020 provides some of the best gameplay the series has ever seen, thanks to some excellent tweaks and changes to the on pitch action. Disappointingly some of the game's modes still lack depth, such as the Ultimate Team competitor - MyClub, however that doesn't stop PES 2020 from offering arguably the finest footballing experience available in a video game right now.

While there are noticeable upgrades with its strengths, with better gameplay and visuals, eFootball PES 2020 still lacks in terms of novelty, with some boring gameplay modes.

As the best soccer/football simulator that can be experienced, PES 20 proves that just a strong and consistent gameplay cannot cause the player to experience a perfect game. Nevertheless, Konami should follow the same path of building the new generation of gameplay on the shattered body of past PES titles in the coming years to modernize the modes, challenges and different parts of the game.
