Critic Reviews for The Lord of the Rings: Adventure Card Game
The Lord of the Rings: Adventure Card Game offers up an unusual mixture of cooperative play and narrative-driven battles that flies in the face of more traditional digital CCGs. If you're looking for a card game more aligned with the rules of a tabletop effort, with more of a role-playing focus, this is definitely going to appeal. The lack of proper support for online PvP is an odd omission considering how popular that feature is in other entries in the genre, but a refreshing lack of suffocating microtransactions does help soothe that wound.
With a strong focus on storytelling, The Lord of the Rings: Adventure Card Game is a PVE collectable card game that will challenge – and sometimes infuriate – card game and strategy fans. While the "always online" demands and the original storyline are bewildering, the gameplay itself is deep and entertaining. Just be ready to shake your head when Sauron whoops up on you at the last minute. Stupid Sauron.
This adventure card game was designed with the love of Tolkien's licence. It is not flouted, but to fully appreciate it, you must still adhere to his world. Otherwise, we end up with a card game with poor content. We'll have to wait for for future additions. There is already an additional campaign, but it's not provided for free... Without this condition, we end up with a good card game, but no added value that makes it stand out from the competitors, especially free in a large number of case.

I walked into The Lord of the Rings: Adventure Card Game fully expecting yet another attempt to "do Hearthstone" on the Nintendo Switch. I walked away thoroughly impressed with how completely the game surprised me.
Lord of the Rings: The Adventure Card Game is charming, if stunted by some inconsistent voice acting and less polished user interface. While some might have wished for player-versus-player options included, the single-player focus allows the card game to hone-in on its core strength – engaging narrated storytelling tied into a solid card game foundation. If you are a lone ring bearer rather than part of a fellowship, this could be a precious experience to you.
While deck building and card battling games have made their appearance on the Switch in a few different forms, none of them has been quite like this...
