The humour grates, but it's fun to play… eventually

Sunset Overdrive is not lacking in enjoyable moments and ideas, but the overall package doesn't manage to live up to the billing publisher Microsoft has thrust upon it. This is not a revolution as far as open-world games go, it's more of a compendium of recognizable elements that have been twisted just enough to make them seem new and different for the uninitiated.

Despite these creative flourishes, Sunset Overdrive never quite surpasses the chaotic physics of Just Cause, the coherent style of Blood Dragon or the assured sense of place of GTAV – nor does it manage to draw its story and systems toward a coherent, impactful point.

Sunset Overdrive has some excellent ideas, but its triumphs are sadly suffocated beneath ultra-repetitive mission design and unsatisfying enemy encounters.

What Sunset Overdrive was shooting for was punk. Where it landed was mallternative.

Sunset Overdrive is solid if underwhelming romp in parts which admirably sets out to poke fun at itself, along with the genre, and inject some joy into proceedings. At times it does, too often it doesn't and it ultimately comes off as a mix of Jak and Daxter along with Tony Hawk minus a lot of the tight gameplay that made those successful. It's really not a system seller, making the Sunset console an oddity but it is a solid open world franchise template which will hopefully improve if we see a sequel in time. Decent but not quite as much fun as it should be.

Sunset Overdrive is not all bad though. I wouldn't even call many of my stated issues actual complaints. They are more like design choices which I really don't agree with.

Sunset Overdrive wears its inspirations on its sleeve, but sports enough solid action and good humor to be worth a play.

Insomniac's zany, colourful blaster is a sugary, cathartic hit best enjoyed in small doses.

There's a lot of greatness within Sunset Overdrive, but it's obfuscated by a lack of difficulty and an aggravating tone. Ultimately, it's worth dealing with the game's worst moments to enjoy the many things it does get right. When you're darting around the world like a ninja in a denim jacket, there's nothing quite like it. If there is a next time for Sunset City, and hopefully there is, maybe things will come together more smoothly than they have here.

Shallow, simplistic, and never quite as funny as it thinks it is, but there's still more energy and imagination at work here than most other new next gen franchises.

While Sunset Overdrive's PC port is essentially great news for fans of the game, it does cut corners in some noteworthy areas, thus preventing it from offering the definitive experience.

if you can experience Sunset Overdrive on Xbox one, then you can easily skip past the PC version but if not you shouldn't miss it. you won't get a polished and easy experience since PC version of Sunset Overdrive struggles a lot with technical issues. but this action adventure title is still worth tolerating those issues and finishing the game at least for once. despite its simple story and monotonous gameplay, Sunset Overdrive is still one of the successful titles of Insomniac, a title that can entertain you for hours with its charming world and bring a funny and sweet experience for you.

Sunset Overdrive wants to be liked and it wants to be different. Badly. The fact that it manages to pull this off in spite of more than a few annoyances is an achievement in itself. At the end of the day, it is a hell of a lot of fun to navigate the city and blast enemies, the customization is enjoyable to mess around with and even some of the attempts at humour land (The re-spawn animations in particular). The shortcomings are there however, and it prevents Sunset Overdrive from being the game it so desperately wants to be seen as.

Pure insanity and madness, combined with Jet Set Radio - that's what I'd describe this game to my friends. I had so many people watching me play this game and the most common reaction was: "I have no clue what you are doing, but man does this look fun!" This pretty much sums up most part of this game: It feels like Insomniac Games just built a giant sandbox full of colors and added as many "Wouldn't-it-be-totally-crazy-if"-ideas as possible. This is pure anarchy as a game with some of the best punkrock music and a great artstyle seen in a long time. There's so much to do and such great humor that you nearly forget that most parts of the game start to get pretty repetitive at times.

You may think the apocalypse is the end, but Sunset Overdrive does something unique by making it the beginning with clever and funny writing, a punk rock mixed with comic book style, and fun traversal abilities.
