Final Fantasy 14 has always had a fairly lenient "no modding" policy, claiming that it's against the game's terms of service, but it's been extremely lackadaisical about actually enforcing this policy. Mods and plugins are pretty much an open secret at this point, so much so that they're often used to ruin world first races whenever new Ultimates are dropped.
One of the more popular uses of mods in FF14 is appearance alteration, as many use a program called Mare Synchronos (also referred to as Mare) to easily share their changes to their character with other players so they can see them. It's a big part of the game's role-playing community, and if you've ever seen some with "Mare Lamentorum" on their Adventurer Plate, that's what they're referring to.
Unfortunately, it seems as though Square Enix's lawyers have caught wind of the program, and aren't too happy with it. First shared by DrakeX with the FF14 subreddit earlier today, the author of Mare Synchronos has announced that they received a "legal inquiry" about the project, and have been forced to shut the entire thing down.
