Sony has officially announced that it is completely changing direction with the PlayStation after an era of failures. The PlayStation 5 may have proven a commercial success, but it still sits without nearly as many exclusives as its predecessors, nor the critical acclaim it garnered. This has been partially due to Sony's push for live service games that have then failed to materialize or flopped at launch and were later pulled.
In its 2025 Corporate Report, Sony has stated that it aims to prioritize single-player games now more than ever, pulling the company away from its live service ambitions and into a bold new era. This will, naturally, have huge ramifications and, in theory, move the entire industry in a similar direction. However, despite this huge change, there is still a risk that Sony could repeat the mistakes of the PlayStation era that it is finally ending.
