Big Walk Developers Aren't Sure They Like The Term 'Friendslop', But They're Happy The Genre Is Popular

Big Walk is a co-operative "online walker-talker" from House House, best-known for developing Untitled Goose Game. The upcoming game is drawing comparisons to Peak, a multiplayer mountain climbing game that became very popular last year.

The term being used to describe games like Peak, Big Walk, Lethal Company, R.E.P.O. and RV There Yet? is "friendslop." This fan-named genre can be used both affectionately and derogatorily; the concept of having fun with friends is good, but something being described as 'slop' sort of diminishes the effort invested in creating the game.

This was partially fueled by the fact that Peak actually was a low-effort venture from co-developers Aggro Crab and Landfall Games, who admitted that Peak was conceptualised and partially developed during a game jam, i.e. made from scratch in a short period of time. However, not every game in the 'friendslop' genre is as low-budget as Peak is.

In an interview with GamesRadar+ at GDC, Stuart Gillespie-Cook and Nico Disseldorp of House House explained their mixed feelings on the term.
