A recent interview from Sonic the Hedgehog series producer Takashi Iizuka reveals that Sega nearly canceled the series 10 years ago. The cancellation was considered during one of the lowest points in the franchise's history after several underperforming Sonic releases.

Since his debut on the Sega Genesis in 1991, Sonic has grown into one of the most recognizable mascots in gaming. Sonic the Hedgehog has produced a litany of main-series games, from its roots in 2D platformers to 3D entries like Sonic Frontiers, plus numerous spin-offs. Sonic the Hedgehog has even extended its reach beyond gaming into animated TV shows, comic books, and even an ongoing series of live-action Sonic movies which have seen huge success. However, a recent interview with one of Sonic Team's most influential executives reveals that Sonic the Hedgehog nearly ended in the mid-2010s.

During a recent interview with GamesRadar, Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka revealed that Sega very nearly canceled the series.
