A survival game is now free on Steam after a period of early access, but there's a catch. In recent years, Steam's early access program has seen hit after hit: Subnautica, Valheim, Satisfactory all came through it successfully. It's a great deal for players and developers alike: some titles are discounted while they're in early access, although players buy them with the understanding that they may be unfinished.
In return, devs can raise some funds and may solicit feedback from early adopters, allowing them to influence the direction of the game's development. But early access comes with no guarantees, and we're watching its worst-case scenario play out in real time with this new Steam freebie.
