4 / 5.0 - Surviving Mars
Mar 15, 2018

Ultimately Surviving Mars is a fantastic simulation and strategy game. Again, it might be off-putting inexperienced players, and advanced players will likely need to find their own fun in the long term by creating obstacles for themselves to overcome or to seek out mods, lest it gets repetitive.

If you're an absolute die-hard fan of Life Is Strange, which you likely are if you're considering the deluxe edition, then jump right in and say your own goodbyes to Max and Chloe. However, if you've not played both the original series and Before the Storm in their entirety, Farewell likely won't resonate with you in the same way.

Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 Plus is a great, unique Pac-Man game. Bandai Namco are have lately been surprsing with how far they can bend the Pac-Man formula without breaking it, and Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 Plus is another success of this.

Mike Bithell may have intended for Subsurface Circular to be nothing more than something to fill the time between other projects but his team has created an engaging text-based adventure featuring excellent writing, fleshed out characters, a compelling detective story, and a world with the potential to tell many more tales that would be perfect as a single evening's entertainment. Its unorthodox marketing may have seen it slip under your radar when it came to PC and mobile last year but it's definitely worth trying now that it's on Nintendo's console hybrid.

4.5 / 5.0 - Into The Breach

Into the Breach is brilliant in how it approaches the strategy game genre. By giving the player all the information they need, it's easy to see where exactly you went wrong, and what you could've done to prevent it.

4.5 / 5.0 - Bayonetta 2
Feb 23, 2018

Bayonetta 2 may not be appealing to everyone. Its sexuality and over-the-top tone may be a frustration to some. However, from a design and gameplay point of view, it is up there with the best in its genre. Bayonetta, the side-characters, and the world you’re fighting in are crazy and unique while the combo focused action is deep, yet accessible enough that you feel like an expert in no time. The Nintendo Switch version may not feature much that the Wii U original does not, but the console hybrid is the best place to play one of the best action games of all time. If nothing else, the re-release has made me more excited for Bayonetta 3 than I ever thought I would be.

4.5 / 5.0 - Celeste
Feb 6, 2018

Looking at my death count at the end of the game, it was a little shocking to see that I’d died that many times. But Celeste constantly reassures the player that it’s not something to be ashamed of. Every death is a lesson learned, and with every lesson comes improvement. As long as you don’t give up, there’s always a path to success. Even if you have to fail 2,649 times to see it.

Shadow of the Colossus remains one of the most imaginative games of all time, and this remake only forwards what the original did. Without a doubt, this is the best way you can experience Fumito Ueda’s best game.

Every hunt in Monster Hunter: World demands so much attention from the player. There is a 50 minute time limit precisely because your prey are so tough to kill, and the game makes sure that you put in the effort and dedication required to take it down.

It is obvious that the 1.0 release does not mean an end to content for the game, as creator Brendan Greene has said in interviews that the plan is to use this patch to build off of in future, potentially bringing modding support as well as fleshing out the custom games feature. One thing is for sure, as we look to the future for this powerhouse of a game, the sky is the limit.

To my surprise, Styling Star charmed me a lot more than I initially expected. Though most of the characters in the game felt rather one-dimensional and bland, their in-game animations were always fluid and distinct, and matched their personalities.

3.5 / 5.0 - Tiny Metal
Dec 21, 2017

Tiny Metal is an admirable return to the traditional turn-based strategy genre. There's enough of a challenge both in the campaign and skirmish mode to keep players happy for a good while, but the lack of any sort of multiplayer at launch hurts its overall score.

Deck Nine had a pretty tall task when it came to Life Is Strange: Before the Storm. Creating a prequel that would satiate the series' fans is tough enough, and they've passed with flying colors in that regard. However, it's the way in which Deck Nine has really honed in on the identity of the original series that makes it so special.

It's disappointing because the foundation is there. I can't help but feel that there just wasn't enough time to fully flesh this expansion out.

4 / 5.0 - Okami HD

It's for this reason that it's not hard to see why the game has amassed a following throughout all these years. A memorable Japanese ethos lives and breathes through Amaterasu and all the characters she encounters on her journey, not to mention the world that bursts to color beneath her paws.

Minecraft: Story Mode has been such an enjoyable adventure to go through from start to finish, and even if Telltale chooses to leave this story as it is, I'd say they've done a pretty good job at constructing a simple but meaningful story with a satisfying close at the end.

Seven's narrative is certainly its main draw and rescues its often woeful gameplay. The lackluster stealth and boring combat aren't exactly praises for the game, but those flaws are nothing compared to the confusing and frustrating world design that feels like it's actively trying to make me stop playing the game – and I really did want to stop.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 certainly isn't a title for those looking for a quick to play RPG or an easy to learn experience, but for anyone willing to invest the time there's a gem underneath that just needs to be buffed out.

Dead Rising 4: Frank's Big Package still comes with all the flaws and warts it had during its original release, but if you can look past that, and deal with some laggy multiplayer connection problems, there's still a fun and varied story experience waiting for you here.
