7.5 / 10.0 - Ultracore
Feb 10, 2020

Ultracore is a very solid 2D action game, if a bit unfair at times. Retro game enthusiasts would adore the deftly crafted pixel art ,and classic run and gun gameplay.

A fairly chill and relaxing visual novel that has some decent worldbuilding and a likeable cast of characters.

While it does lean a bit on the easy side, kids will love this. Kunai could easily be a defacto entry level metroidvania to introduce to children.

This sort of gameplay is much better suited for casual play on a portable gaming device during a long commute, than on a stationary game console.

Despite all its faults, I still really enjoy Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. It simply does such a good job translating the core events of Dragon Ball Z into a game that it’s impossible not to recommend it to nostalgic fans.

I give it a tenuous recommendation to fans of XCOM

With a little bit of refinement, and by committing wholly to the notion of adopting a new identity, Darksiders could definitely make itself a staple of the genre.

While I would have preferred to see the franchise to return as a nice and proper sim like the old days, MechWarrior 5 still scratches my itch to stomp around the battlefields of the future in a giant robotic war machine.

6 / 10.0 - Death Stranding

In a way, I respect Kojima for coming out with something he had to know a ton of people wouldn’t like. At the end of the day, though, I just wanted to have fun playing video games, and slogging through snow for a half an hour just to deliver a jar of bugs to someone isn’t my idea of entertainment.

Older fans are catered to in tournaments and events, making it hard to claim it is “just a kid’s game.” Even as a kid’s game, one giant leap for Pokemon is one small step to the industry standard.

Argonus represents the limits of where you can take one genre without treading suspiciously into the next. It tells a fantastic story, accompanied by equally fantastic sound effects, music, and art.

8.5 / 10.0 - My Friend Pedro
Nov 7, 2019

Perfectly sized, tons of fun, and endlessly replayable, My Friend Pedro is one of the more stylish indie releases we’ve seen in 2019 and deserves a place in your library.

Super Neptunia RPG, like its predecessors, has cut back significantly on fan service, though there are still several instances that nod at the series’ origins.

8.5 / 10.0 - Siege of Centauri
Nov 7, 2019

Siege of Centauri is a very enjoyable tower defense and strategy game hybrid. The game had some bumps at launch but has received patches and updates since. This honestly feels like somewhat of an experiment for Stardock, a side project while they have the next big RTS cooking in the oven.

Stygian ultimately makes for an unfinished, buggy, disjointed, and confusing game. The madness suffered playing isn’t worth the time. Life was better before The Reign of the Old Ones.

9.5 / 10.0 - Shenmue III
Nov 7, 2019

With this new entry, only 40 percent of the entire Shenmue story has been told according to the game’s creator. While Shenmue III doesn’t move the plot as far as I’d like, I’m hungry for more.

The story is through and through a classic Star Wars tale, set within the first and second trilogies, and yet it falls short of truly being a must-buy due to its technical problems and its somewhat disappointing combat and mechanics. I simply wanted more, and a more polished game.

Ultimately, the game hits home where it matters: Despite its flaws, it is a lot of fun.

All in all, Atelier Ryza is a welcome breath of fresh air for the series with its overhauling of core mechanics, as well as its visuals – which look better than ever. This is yet another excellent game in the series, and makes me feel like Gust is thinking of ways to refine the formula even more.
