4 / 10.0 - Apex Legends
Mar 16, 2021

I understand that many people only have a Nintendo Switch as a primary console, and I'm saddened that this version of the game will be their first introduction to what is hands down one of my favorites to play. The poor performance and visuals make it almost unplayable and detract from its overall quality. It almost spoils the essence that is Apex Legends. It's a buggy mess of a shooter that I'm surprised was ported given its current condition on Nintendo Switch.

Mable & the Wood had a lot going for it: the promise of a Metroidvania, a slew of interesting mechanics, and a decent storyline. But the final product isn't worth your time or the asking price (even with a launch discount).

Super Dragon Ball Heroes: World Mission is a frustratingly monotonous, plodding, mindless game. Being skilled at hitting the A button at the right moment is more important than the cards you bring into a battle.

From an aesthetic and button layout perspective, Code of Princess EX is really good. If its story was more layered, its characters were more fleshed out, and you could split the Joy-Con, this would have easily been one of the top games of the year. Unfortunately, they are not, and you cannot.

There are restaurant meals out there that cost less, are more satisfying, and somehow last longer than Guilt Battle Arena. Stay far away.

While Barbie and Her Sisters: Puppy Rescue isn't a game targeted for me, I don't know if young kids will be able to enjoy it either. The Barbie on her bike segments are a big chunk of the game, and they are very clunky and at times confusing, which could be very off-putting to younger gamers. It's a budget retail release at $39.99, but with the stellar Wii U lineup of family friendly first party titles, it's hard to recommend this game as a purchase. If you have a kid that's an extreme Barbie fan, this may be worth a look, but other than that I'd leave Barbie and Her Sisters: Puppy Rescue in the kennel.

It should not be a surprise by now that licensed games are often released for younger audiences in order to milk the franchise, and are most of the time developed with a low budget that results in a cheap experience. As someone who played some of these games during my childhood, I was hoping to have a nice experience with Monster High New Ghoul in School despite being 19 years old, but this title was not an exception to that rule.

4 / 10.0 - Devil's Third

Do I regret my time with Devil's Third?  Yes I do.

You would need to be a really hardcore SpongeBob SquarePants, Rugrats, Hey Arnold!, or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fan to prefer this. I don't doubt that there is a really good game that could be made with the Nickelodeon license, but it needs to have much better core mechanics. And with such a great library of Nickelodeon properties available, you can't help but feel it should be using more of them.

There are plenty of solid mobile ports on Switch–see Riptide GP: Renegade and Astro Duel Deluxe–but Jumping Joe & Friends is not one of them. The local multiplayer is the game's best feature, but ultimately the game is just way too bland.

4.5 / 10.0 - Don't Knock Twice
Oct 20, 2017

If the frame-rate was smooth and the game was more technically sound, I could see potential for a fun horror game. The atmosphere is nice, the audio is extremely well done, and the story seems pretty interesting as well. It's just a shame that the frame-rate is so bad that you probably won't make it til the end to see the conclusion.

Metroid Prime: Federation Force is not a good game at all. When you find yourself just wanting to complete levels to see if the game ever changes and gets better, that’s a sign that something is very wrong. The core gameplay is simplistic, boring, and not the level of quality one would expect from a Metroid game. Other M may have been the most fan-derided Metroid game until now, but Federation Force will easily take the crown from here on out.

4.5 / 10.0 - Pokemon Picross
Dec 3, 2015

If you love Picross but don't want to spend over $32 for the full experience, check the Picross e series which are from the same developer. Each of the six titles cost $5.99, and you will have a bigger and better experience for around the same price.

As a Star Wars and LEGO fan, I found it extremely hard to dislike LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens. But, after playing through it in its entirety, I can't help but feel robbed of my money. Sure, the game includes a physical set to build Poe's nifty X-Wing, but that's probably where you will have the most fun. If there was an option to jump to lightspeed to the end of the game, even that ride would be too short.

4.5 / 10.0 - The Perplexing Orb
Jan 21, 2016

All in all, it is hard to recommend The Perplexing Orb. Certainly it is not incompetent — the physics work, and the core is fine — but nothing is done to make it stand out. The level design is totally unremarkable, the length is short, and the visuals and music, while mostly not unpleasant, are just unimpressive. Even so, those that like rolling a ball through an obstacle course will find something to enjoy here.

4.5 / 10.0 - Soul Axiom
Sep 30, 2016

Soul Axiom for Wii U is a rough port of an interesting first-person puzzler that just doesn't quite live up to its potential. The combination of frustrating controls, poor graphics that don't live up to the PC version, and intentionally slow storytelling may be too much for anyone that is not a huge fan of the first person puzzle genre.

4.5 / 10.0 - Starwhal
Oct 10, 2015

Indie games are certainly very unique. Since the majority of the studios behind these titles are very small, the developers are free to come up with any idea and execute it as they see fit. After all, it is their creation. With that in mind, I'm not one to knock anyone's creative ability; however, I will say that there are some things that are better left as more of an inside joke than an actual public release, and that's exactly how I feel about STARWHAL .

In its brief runtime, Half Past Fate: Romantic Distancing tries to tell a charming story of romance amid the pandemic, but it's just a waste of an hour instead. Give the original game a try in lieu of this.
