7.5 / 10.0 - Nidhogg 2
Aug 31, 2017

Messhof Games was able to expand upon a simple concept in Nidhogg 2 without ruining what made the first game great. The new weapons are a welcome addition to the franchise, and the variety of maps prevents the experience from growing dull too quickly. However, it would have been nice had the developers put more thought and care into making the online play better, because as it stands right now, it simply isn't worth the hassle.

Ys VIII sets the bar high for Adol Christin's next adventure. This is one of the best Ys titles yet, and one of the best RPGs of the year.

7.5 / 10.0 - Songbringer
Aug 31, 2017

A rewarding sense of exploration drives this tribute to the 16-bit era. Strong ability based progression mechanics underline the Zelda-like comparison and procedurally generated elements complement the structure well. While its combat lacks precision, Songbringer is a very positive overall experience.

If you can get past some minor control issues, White Day: A Labyrinth Named School is a unique horror experience with great level design, a gripping story, and more ghosts than you can shake a purification stick at.

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy is a shorter but still extremely well made Uncharted game that plays up all the strengths of the series.

8 / 10.0 - Immortal Planet
Aug 29, 2017

A love letter to Dark Souls that is more than capable of holding it's own. An intriguing story and setting, well designed enemies and levels, a great art style and keen sense of musical direction all contribute to make Immortal Planet an excellent ARPG.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle gets more right than wrong in creating a casual and fun tactics experience, but tedious puzzle sections and a shotgun approach to Mario references holds it back from greatness.

If you can ignore the fact that Sign of the Times' story requires Lincoln to be completely out of character, it's a pretty fun expansion that adds in neat side quest content and a fun story.

For a freshman effort by an indie developer, there is just enough to really get your attention in Masquerada, and I look forward to seeing what Witching Hour Studios does next. Behind the mask of this game is a studio with a lot of heart, and while their first outing is ultimately flawed, their heart is sometimes all you need to make your mark in the gaming world.

8.5 / 10.0 - Yakuza Kiwami
Aug 21, 2017

A concise and emotional story that cuts out the filler and perfectly mixes in varied and interesting combat. At its core, Yakuza Kiwami is still a PlayStation 2 game, but its short and sweet nature doesn't hold it back in the long run.

4.5 / 10.0 - Death Squared

If you're desperate for a local co-op puzzle game, then Death Squared will certainly scratch that itch. However, lack of variety in levels means that it can get pretty monotonous very quickly.

7.5 / 10.0 - Endless Space 2
Aug 16, 2017

Endless Space 2 is a standard 4X that happens to contain some of the most artfully constructed lore and environment we've seen in years. Marred by strange design choices and often cookie cutter empire management, Endless Space 2 will nonetheless leave you thinking about the various characters you meet for a long time.

8 / 10.0 - Agents of Mayhem
Aug 16, 2017

Agents of Mayhem is Volition trying something new with a bit of their longstanding franchises mixed in, and they mostly do a great job at forging new paths. It has a few bugs and it's not perfect, but it makes for an excellent new game with a heck of a lot of character.

Unscored - Sudden Strike 4
Aug 11, 2017

Sudden Strike 4 barely manages to work on even a basic level, with so many glitches constantly stopping my game. If there were no glitches and if there was a working control scheme then maybe, just maybe, Sudden Strike 4 would be a totally average World War 2 RTS that doesn't really stand out in any way. In its current state, it's just a horrid mess.
