Respawning's Reviews

Overall I didn’t really have a good time with Anima: Gate of Memories – The Nameless Chronicles. It was way too boring and easy for a game that tries to mix RPG elements with Bayonetta & Devil May Cry – The gameplay was a slog and the story was mediocre; the only things I found interesting at most were the art style for the most part and the music.

So yes, Illusion is worth a run through if only for the environments and the story of Euclid alone. It’s not often that I get so invested in a storyline, but the tragedy that is Euclid is hard not to get wrapped up in, and I found myself putting up with the repetition and the tedium of the gameplay to find out more. So, if you want something like Limbo or Braid, go elsewhere. If you want to share in one of the most emotive stories I’ve ever seen, and some pretty environments to enjoy it in, then definitely give this hidden gem a go.

6.5 / 10.0 - The Lost Child
Jun 13, 2018

Overall I had a good time with the Lost Child. If you’re waiting for SMTV or something this will definitely scratch that itch as well as give you a really cool and sometimes legitimately interesting story. Where the game falls flat is once again the odd art direction and diminishing returns of its dungeons and combat encounters. If they were able to spice up the game in that regard it would have been an almost amazing game.

7 / 10.0 - Milanoir
Jun 7, 2018

So all things considered, I had a pretty great experience with his game. The gameplay can get somewhat repetitive and there are some things here and there which can play to Milanoir’s strengths… But also it’s weaknesses. The fun characters of Milanoir and their interactions with each other, the fun and dumb world established in this game, and the environments explored is what made it for me.

6 / 10.0 - Gal*Gun 2
Jun 5, 2018

Anyways, I’ve rambled on long enough; so whats the verdict? Well, I think for the fun romp it is, Gal Gun sure has a lot more to offer from it’s previous entry. I think that if this series wants to go on, however, it needs to just have better feeling gameplay to keep people engaged… And though the story isn’t something Shakespearean, it certainly gets the job done in a silly and harmless manner.

8 / 10 - Vampyr
Jun 3, 2018

Vampyr is a game marred by a mediocre combat system, but you know what? I don’t care – It’s the first game in a long time that made me think Vampires are cool again, with an incredibly interesting story that has me unable to stop thinking about what’s happening next.

So overall I’d say the this collection did an amazing job at bringing arcade perfect ports to the latest console generation as well as preserving some amazing history through the design docs, art work etc. The main issue being the online is a little wonky right now can hopefully be fixed. If that happens we have a really special collection, which I’ll be playing for hours on end regardless.

When returning to Resident Evil 1, some obvious flaws are apparent given the title’s age, such as the game’s tank-like controls, often awkward camera and downright cheesy dialogue… But in a bizarre way that adds to the charm of the title – The thematic tension you feel when exploring the manor… The fear you feel around every corner… The tension of solving a puzzle in the nick of time or making that narrow escape… Well, there’s nothing quite like it nowadays.

Overall I think that Megadimension Neptunia VIIR as a game is pretty mediocre; it’s right on the 5 / 10 line for me and I don’t think I’ll be coming back to it, personally. For some people (And most importantly fans), this game will be the bees’ knees, but for me I’d rather go and look at my better quality waifus.

6 / 10.0 - Raging Justice
May 16, 2018

Overall, Raging Justice doesn’t bring anything new to the table really – but doesn’t do anything wrong either. If you’re looking for a decent timesink for a few hours with enough nostalgia to keep your inner child grinning, then this is for you – but don’t expect it to last much longer than that, with very little to keep you playing post the main game. Maybe there would be more joy to be had if I’d played the game with a friend in co-op, but I wouldn’t know…since I don’t have friends.

8.5 / 10.0 - Just Cause 3
May 10, 2018

The game is immensely fun. It has heart and soul but also gives the vibe of not caring how stupid it can be; and while the game has a few flaws, none of them cause the game to have a reason not to be played. So if you haven’t done so (If you haven’t already, why not?) go out, get the game, buy a disk, get it from a digital store, play the shit out of it. If you’ve already got the game, keep playing it. Finished it? There’s always the multiplayer mod.

Despite the framerate issues, this is a good game that I enjoyed playing. Some of the 2D animations are a little weird but it just adds to the feel of the game. If you’re someone who played this game before and has a burning desire to play it again I’d say go ahead, it will satisfy your desire. Likewise if you’re a fan of VanillaWare games. If you haven’t played it before, however, I would say maybe have a look at the game on the PS3 or Vita; it will probably be a little cheaper.

8.5 / 10.0 - Far Cry 5
May 5, 2018

I had a heap of fun with this game and it’s definitely my favourite in the series. I wasn’t bored for a second and cannot wait to go back to it some time; I felt I did rush it a little as I wanted to get to God of War, but I would have definitely spent more time on it had that not been the case. I wasn’t sure how I felt about the ending of the game, but I don’t want to spoil that. Trust me pick up this game, you won’t regret it.

10 / 10.0 - God of War
May 2, 2018

So in summary God of War is a beautiful, emotional and exciting trip through Norse mythology with an attention to detail and character you just don’t see very often in triple A games. While the massive shift in style and storytelling was a huge risk for such an established franchise Santa Monica have really done the character justice and refreshed the series without alienating the core fan base or scaring away new players. As a gamer and a wannabe Viking this is easily my current contender for game of the year and definitely one of the highlights of the generation.

In all honesty Space Hulk: Deathwing is a good solid game with plenty to keep you shooting and stabbing your way through wave after wave of aliens for a few good hours at least. Maybe with a little more polish and a few gameplay changes we might have had a real contender in the world of co-op shooters but unfortunately with titans like Left 4 Dead and Gears of War still showing us how it’s done years later, Deathwing just doesn’t bring anything fresh enough to really stand out as anything more than a gimmick. By all means give it a try and I’m sure you won’t be disappointed, but unless you’re a huge fan of Warhammer 40K I just don’t think you’ll be wowed.

8.5 / 10.0 - A Way Out
Apr 27, 2018

There’s not a tonne more that I can say as it is a short game, but it’s an awesome short game. All I’ll say is find a good mate, set aside a day and do it one sitting with a few beers. You’ll not have as much co-op fun this year as you will here.

5 / 10.0 - Bullet Witch
Apr 26, 2018

Bullet Witch is just as bad today as it was in 2006 – whether that’s a good thing or not is up to your personal tastes, but in my opinion, the game requires far too many friends and alcohol involved in the action for the campiness to be tolerable. At least it didn’t get worse, right?

All in all, Manticore: Galaxy on Fire is a very traditional arcade-like space battle title that often tries too hard to stick to conventions rather than to push the galactic boat out – Missions feel repetitive, enemies offer little variety, and locations feel samey, however when taken in short bursts, this game is a delight – Marathoning Manticore is probably the biggest disservice you can give it, as you will most likely get bored after an hour. Manticore: Galaxy on Fire isn’t bad by any stretch of the imagination, rather it’s not amazingly good either – It’s almost stuck in the middle, in the endless void of ‘just better than average’, much like the ships you’ll spend hours piloting.

1 / 10.0 - Titan Quest
Apr 10, 2018

To sum it all up. Titan Quest is a boring, ugly and downright obnoxious pile of garbage that shouldn’t have even seen the light of day. With nothing really going for it and without even a sense of “its so bad its good” this is the kind of game you should wait till you see it free to play. Even then? i wouldn’t fucking bother. Just go outside. see your family. Maybe even find true love. This just isn’t for gamers or the human race as a whole.

So yea, Penny Punching Princess is a pretty neat game. I really like the aesthetic and the music is great too. It has some clunky gameplay but it’s also so crunchy and satisfying I keep coming back for more. The story is fairly boring and I kinda couldn’t care less about it but hey at least it’s there. The characters are cute, the gameplay is unique enough I’d say and overall it’s a fun time. You’ll be spending a whole lotta time with this game since it’s got a good amount of missions for you to play.
