Nintendo Blast's Reviews

Nov 2, 2022

Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope comes from the unexpected success of a spin-off that was highly discredited until it proved itself successful. Thus, while much was expected from the sequel, there was a feeling it wouldn't need to do much to repeat the feat. Without any doubt, I can say Ubisoft hit the mark once again.

7.5 / 10.0 - LEGO Bricktales
Oct 30, 2022

Something commendable and even ironic about LEGO Bricktales is that the game differentiates itself by bringing to games something that is so intrinsic to building blocks, which is the act of building. Looking back, it's even hard to understand how this hadn't been done before. With its puzzles, the title reproduces the process of reasoning, logic and creativity required in playing with real pieces. Added to the creative scenarios and the shallow but fun script, this factor makes the 10 hours of the game, for the most part, very pleasant. A general improvement to certain mechanics like camera control would make usability much better. Fortunately, ClockStone Software has released updates that fixed some performance issues and bugs, but more improvements would be welcome.

5.5 / 10.0 - Mr. Prepper
Oct 22, 2022

Mr. Prepper might be a fun game on PC, but it's very frustrating on Nintendo Switch. Although the title has some very interesting construction and management elements, the positive points end up being overshadowed by the excess of menus, uninspired graphics and a terrible control cursor.

7 / 10.0 - Wizorb
Oct 21, 2022

Undeniably, Wizorb is a fun and challenging block breaker that very well embodies the prestige of a genre that has had great names like Breakout, Arkanoid and other arcades. So, even with problems, including the lack of variety of objectives, the low depth of progression and an unstable difficulty, we have another good Switch game, especially when played in an uncompromising way.

5.5 / 10.0 - Paradigm Paradox
Oct 20, 2022

Paradigm Paradox is one of Otomate's shortest visual novels I played so far. Sincerely speaking, the time it took to clear some of those routes was the same eight hours it took me to read some indie visual novels (also on Switch) — and those had better developed plot, by the way. Sadly, the impression it leaves is that [the developers] prioritized quantity instead of quality, but, you may take solace in its beautiful artwork.

Finally Them's Fightin' Herds is available on consoles and proves to be a very competent fighting game. Although its reduced cast and the inconvenient challenges of the story mode weigh a little, the concept of fights between quadrupeds, the strong charisma, the good variety of modes and the unique campaign concept draw attention within the genre and make it a title worth checking out.

7 / 10.0 - Atari Mania
Oct 17, 2022

Despite the problems, Atari Mania is an extremely fun experience. The integration of the gallery with the story mode, which goes straight to the point, the quality and variety of the microgames, the extra content available and the celebration atmosphere make this an excellent and modern retro title, indispensable for those who like the style and for the company fans.

8.5 / 10.0 - Foretales
Oct 13, 2022

I don't consider myself a big fan of card games but Foretales offered such a convincing perspective that made me interested in the genre. Through ingenious gameplay concepts, exploring a complex narrative with freedom for progression, the title proves itself compelling, establishing the profetic journey of the mercenary Volepain as an excellent card game in the Switch library.

7.5 / 10.0 - Chaos;Head Noah
Oct 10, 2022

Chaos;Head Noah is a classic visual novel that explores a very pertinent discussion about our sense of reality. Unfortunately, after so many years of expectation for the western release, the game comes with translation text of a subpar quality compared to what it deserved. Even so, for the fans of the genre, it's a work worth checking out.

8.5 / 10.0 - Chaos;Child
Oct 10, 2022

Chaos;Child is a great example of the visual novels' potential. With its dark atmosphere, the title uses concepts from Chaos;Head to create a modern and impressive experience. Though the Switch edition introduces some small technical issues that weren't present in the previous versions, it's a must-play for fans of narrative games.

5.5 / 10.0 - Jack Move
Oct 6, 2022

Jack Move starts off enchanting with a beautiful visual presentation and a rousing soundtrack, but the technological magic quickly wears off. When we finally realize it, the game is over and all that's left is the feeling that the hours spent were not well spent.

Although with occasional reservations in narrative, gameplay and audiovisual aspects, NieR:Automata The End of YoRHa Edition is a highly creative, ingenious, sensitive and deep game, with many coherent layers. In addition, it manages to be accessible and fun while experimentally integrating its exotic choices of battle, interface, music and others around humanistic and existential issues.

8.5 / 10.0 - Shovel Knight Dig
Oct 5, 2022

Shovel Knight Dig is a great and accessible roguelike that proves that the Yacht Club Games knight is capable of leading good adventures in different genres. While not without its flaws, this nimble and fun journey manages to entertain by wisely using risk and reward dynamics in various aspects of its design until victory is finally achieved. Let's keep digging then!

7.5 / 10.0 - Tunic
Oct 4, 2022

Tunic is just as much of a charming and creative game as it is difficult and frustrating. It's easy to imagine its cute visuals and similarities to Zelda will attract a public who wouldn't be inclined to explore everything it has to offer. This is an adventure that demands sharp reflexes and a good dose of patience, masking a tough and tiresome experience with its adorable shell. The performance on Switch could have been better but it will hardly cause more players to abandon it as much as the title's high challenge.

The DioField Chronicle has an exceptionally accessible progression, brings good customization to the characters, has beautiful concept art and a coherent and characterful audiovisual style. Despite some technical parameters that leave a little to be desired, the script that doesn't flow as well as it could and the level design that is one of the simplest I've ever seen in SRPGs, the balance is still a little more positive. The title is recommended for newcomers to strategy RPGs, but some veterans may feel dissatisfied or a little bored.

8.5 / 10.0 - Picross S8
Sep 29, 2022

Once again, Picross S8 is an excellent example of a logic puzzle. Its main novelty is the co-op mode, but, at least right now, it doesn't feel like a major new feature for the fans of the genre, as solving these [mental] challenges is usually a lonesome, reflective and intimist experience. Even so, the elegant design, simple Portuguese tutorials, quality of life resources and rich content make it a phenomenal experience and consistent [in quality] with its predecessors.

Return to Monkey Island brings another high quality Guybrush Threepwood journey, clearly demonstrating the charisma of the series that captivated many players and was deeply important to the development of point-and-clicks. The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero is an excellent JRPG and a perfect entrypoint to Falcom's franchise, which yearly renovates its ambition to be the biggest and best story of the genre. Its release on the west, even if late, shows that some things are worth waiting; and a good adaptation to Switch makes this adventure practically perfect on Nintendo's hybrid system.

Despite again reusing many features of the predecessors in its series and the level design not having evolved (even regressed in some aspects), the audiovisual remains fresh and brings a good balance of previous experiences in the series. In addition, combat is more customizable and the new capture mechanic is worked intelligently and critically into the game's narrative.
