NZGamer's Reviews

At one point in Uncharted 2, Nathan Drake says to Sully, "you've got a great ass"; elsewhere in the game, he makes a similar remark about Chloe's. And now, thanks to Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, everyone's butts - and the great characters, stories, laughs, drama, and adventures that go with them - are looking and sounding better than ever.

While there's a robust simplicity to the gameplay that is engaging, right or wrong, we've all got used to a level of completeness and polish that PES, even twenty years on, is still sometimes missing.

8.5 / 10.0 - LEGO Dimensions
Oct 5, 2015

There are already plenty of add-on sets due for release in the coming months, including packs featuring Aquaman, Doc Brown, and Bart Simpson; and with LEGO's brand presence and ability to attract franchises, there is no limit to what might be around the corner. So if your wallet is equally limitless, there is a lot of good old fashioned family fun to be had here.

8.8 / 10.0 - FIFA 16
Sep 30, 2015

Despite these niggles, FIFA 16 brings exciting football to life and being able to control the ball better and run at defenders with confidence makes for some thrilling game time. As expected with FIFA - the soundtrack is appropriately diverse and appealing, and there isn't any noticeable lag online yet either. It's a worthy step-up from FIFA 15 by fine-tuning small aspects of the game, but not compromising the formula fans have grown to love.

This is the first sign we've had that Destiny just might become the game many think it could be.

Super Mario Maker is a beautifully crafted and unique game and it feels like Nintendo have put honest time and love into creating it. Other than the fact that timing a jump on the springboards is still horrifically challenging (but it has been for as long as I've been playing Super Mario), you simply cannot fault the meticulous production quality. The simplistic charm and fabulously colourful world will keep you coming back for more, but for how long is really dependent on the player and the reasons they love Super Mario in the first place.

7 / 10.0 - Devil's Third
Sep 23, 2015

Overall this feels pretty rushed for a Tomonobu Itagaki title – none of his Ninja Gaiden titles suffered from the same issues as this. The soldiers Ivan's teamed up with are a bunch of generic - almost cliché - and didn't add to the story, or help with bosses, making them fairly pointless.  However, despite all that, it was fun, and in the end this could have been a great straight up beat 'em up if they had left out the shooter aspect.

[Kojima]'s made a game that utilises more fully what a game should, with all the learning curves that come with trying something new. Metal Gear Solid 5 is the best stealth game I've ever played, it's just not the best open-world one.

Turn 10 haven't raised the bar with this release - because they've already put it as high as it needs to be.

With so many figures . . . , it's pretty easy for the overall cost of a game like Disney Infinity 3.0 to stack up. But at the same time, if you're smart about it (and able to defuse your kids' desire to buy 'All The Things') Disney Infinity offers a much more affordable approach to gaming than just buying new games all the time.

7.4 / 10.0 - Mad Max
Sep 14, 2015

Max, in the game, could be anyone. There's no story. He's just a reason to drive around a desert, crashing into things, blowing things up, and fighting. Not that I've got anything against that. Mad Max provides plenty of enjoyable hours of crashing into things and fighting. But, for a desert wasteland there is an awful lot of gasoline, I never got close to running out.

7 / 10.0 - Beyond Eyes
Sep 8, 2015

Overall I think the creators reached too far with Beyond Eyes. Even the name feels wrong attached to this game. It needed more challenges or a more intimate sense of gameplay. It's a hard task recreating within a visual medium the feeling of being newly blind. Close your eyes, even in a familiar space, and then walk around. Now think how you'd make that into a game. I think Beyond Eyes takes a good stab at it, but ultimately comes up short.

9.4 / 10.0 - Tearaway Unfolded
Sep 3, 2015

It's a fresh take on the same ideas that made Tearaway so good, and even if the different hardware means it doesn't capture that feeling of "holding a world in your hand" as well as the Vita game, Unfolded is still a must-play for anyone with a PS4, regardless of whether or not you've played the original.

8.4 / 10.0 - Madden NFL 16
Sep 3, 2015

It's always a bit hyperbolic to say "best Madden ever" before the community play-style has settled - but in terms of the gameplay mechanics, the franchise is at the most realistic point it's reached to date.

One of the first rules of game design, or design in general, is to establish function before working on the form of the piece. There is simply no point in having a game that is stunning to look at and listen to, when it just isn't fun to play.

6 / 10.0 - Nova-111
Sep 2, 2015

There is fun to be had if you're after a tiny challenge during a coffee break, or you're playing on your Playstation Vita in short bursts, but otherwise Nova-111 is a fairly forgettable title - and that's a real shame.

Truth be told, I enjoyed my time with The White March - Part One. It was a great reason to jump back in, and while it's not as grand as some of the RPG expansions we've had for other games in this genre (see Baldur's Gate: Throne of Bhaal), it was still a good experience, and one that works almost seamlessly into a new player's playthrough of the main game.
