4 / 5.0 - Not a Hero
May 21, 2015

Not A Hero is a game that rarely slows down, offers a ton of variety to both primary and secondary missions, and is seeping with beautiful nostalgia. While it's sometimes wearisome trying to get through a single mission that keeps getting you down, when you finally get past that hurdle, there's always something new waiting.

4 / 5.0 - FIRE
Apr 16, 2015

I suppose the best way to wrap up Fire is to say that it's a good, well-made point and click adventure. While this genre isn't what everyone is looking for in their games, fans of the style definitely have reason to keep an eye on it.

Altogether, Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds offers a great mix of insane action and intriguing story, though the combat is definitely the meat of the game. Slick, responsive controls and a variety of characters and abilities keep the game fresh.

4 / 5.0 - Gravity Ghost
Feb 9, 2015

As a whole, Gravity Ghost puts together a wonderful fantasy experience, with enough interesting elements and over 100 levels to play through. While it's still relatively short — experienced gamers could likely speed through in one or two hours — there's still enough to recommend.

4 / 5.0 - Fenix Rage
Oct 3, 2014

All told, Fenix Rage is a snappy, well-designed but infuriatingly difficult platformer. Fans of Super Meat Boy and the like would do well to check it out, either now via Steam for $14.

Perhaps it's the warped, half-meaningless dialogue or the impending sense of your inability to change your fate; maybe it's the way levels shift around each time you play, or the variety of strange quests you're set upon without much direction; it could even just be the fleeting glimpse of possibility, cradled underneath this game's cloak of philosophy and confounding introspection, but I can say that I honestly enjoyed my journey here, and while I wouldn't say it's going to be everyone's cup of tea, anyone who's enjoyed the experimental indie games that seep into the market of late owes themselves at least a passing glance at this one.

4 / 5.0 - FRACT OSC
Apr 21, 2014

While Fract OSC is probably squarely in the 'not for everyone' category, those interested in a unique, music-centric experience with a healthy dose of exploration and obscure puzzles should definitely check out what this one has to offer.

Ultimately, Poltergeist: A Pixelated Horror leaves some to be desired from a design perspective, but the puzzles and variety to solutions is fun, engaging, and difficult without being frustrating. Challenges present themselves in a nice, sequential order that builds upon itself level after level.

4 / 5.0 - Ronin
Jul 7, 2015

Altogether, Ronin creates an entirely novel experience that's given a solid boost from the sound and graphic design. While some frustration crops up in enemy-heavy territory, some trial-and-error in addition to strategic thinking is more than enough to get through even the tightest squeezes.

4 / 5.0 - Zenzizenzic
Jul 23, 2015

In the end, Zenzizenzic is a great game for those who like the twin stick shoot-em-up genre, but may be looking for something with a little more to it. Great design, smooth controls, and plentiful upgrades and weapon options means there's plenty to check out, and the ever-growing Macro Mode offers a unique take.

4 / 5.0 - Son of Nor

With a reasonable $19.99 price on Steam, stillalive clearly knows its place in the market, but without sacrificing on the effort that clearly went into creating the game.

If you're a fan of exploration, puzzles, or pigs, you probably owe it to yourself to try this one out.

Overall, though, the mechanic works great, and fits well with the quirky fun of the game itself. This was a pretty unique and interesting title, and I may find myself playing through again later just to see how it holds up once you know the solutions.

4 / 5.0 - The Novelist
Dec 11, 2013

I'd easily recommend it for anyone interested in thoughtful, emotionally-driven story — though, its focus on this is likely a detractor for many more "traditional" gamers.

4 / 5.0 - Mad Max
Sep 4, 2015

With it's great visuals, film-like appeal, and incredibly fun and engaging car on car combat, there's a lot going for it. I give it a solid recommendation for any fan of the film series or of open-world, car-heavy games. Maybe it isn't everything it could have been, but it sure as hell isn't the typical film-to-game disasterpiece that many gamers might expect by now.

The long and short of it is that Evoland 2: A Slight Case of Spacetime Continuum Disorder is an absolute must-play for action-RPG fans. With the variety of game styles represented, the well-written dialogue, and rich (if sometimes predictable) story, it's a classic in its own right and filled with nods to genre greats.

If there's one trend I've found myself loving from the modern surge of indie titles, it's a well-executed minimalism. With simple graphics, clever yet natural controls, and a unique mechanic for a classic genre, The Sun and Moon is a title that shines.

4 / 5.0 - Bedlam
Oct 15, 2015

In all, Bedlam is like a love letter to gaming's history, and a relatively well-written one. By staying true to the idea of the game in which Quinn/Athena is trapped, it keeps itself well-centered. The variety to the levels keeps things interesting, and there's even a deathmatch scenario early on that's almost exactly like playing a game of Unreal Tournament with low gravity.

4 / 5.0 - Satellite Reign
Sep 22, 2015

Altogether, Satellite Reign is a great experience with a richly-detailed world and approach. While the concept isn't necessarily groundbreaking in a world where games like Shadowrun and the spiritually-preceding Syndicate series have covered much of the idea, it still creates a compelling experience that is unique and well-built.

4 / 5.0 - Dropsy
Sep 15, 2015

Ultimately, Dropsy delivers an entirely unique and engaging experience. Well made from start to finish, and filled with twists and perils, it's perhaps the best fusion of terrifying horror and heart-melting joy that I've ever seen.
