Super Bomberman R Online Reviews
Super Bomberman R Online joins many of its peers as the latest classic franchise to receive a battle royale twist. It's not entirely successful, with technical issues including freezing during gameplay and awfully long waits to get into matches alongside a battle pass and microtransaction system that just doesn't fit in with the nature of the game. Underneath all the added padding, however, is the same classic Bomberman gameplay that's tweaked to fit 64 players, making it an experience that you should, at the very least, download and try out. It's free Bomberman, after all.
An infectious, frantic multiplayer blast, Super Bomberman R Online's major caveat comes from its place amongst the current raft of Stadia exclusives. It doesn't seem to be the place that people are choosing to play major multiplayer games, but in the case of Super Bomberman R Online, that's a crying shame.
Yeah, that's probably it.
Super Bomber R Online could have been a wonderful entry in the series. Its 64 players mode is truly a blast... when it all comes together, which never really happens as it suffers very lenghty loading times, frequent bugs and is made to have you buy its Premium Pack in order to not use very powerful special characters.

Super Bomberman R Online offers your standard online multiplayer space for classic Bomberman battles, with premium perks available but quite a bit of waiting time.
Super Bomberman R Online is a pretty classic Bomberman experience, despite missing some power-ups. Just make sure you enjoy battle royale mode or you're going to have a bad time.
Super Bomberman R Online is THE reason to get a Stadia account. While the paid premium pack can deal some unfair advantages with the initial release, the innovative mixture of classic Bomberman gameplay and a Battle Royale twist make this the best exclusive, and perhaps game available on Stadia, so far.
I have to say that Super Bomberman R Online is actually a pleasant surprise. Like Tetris 99, it takes a classic and injects it with a modern twist to bring it to life once more. It’s familiar, but fresh.
Another issue is that there's no local co-op option; every player needs to have their own game and Switch console. Regardless, any Bomberman fan should be picking this one up. I can readily admit that I fall into that camp, and I've been having a blast.
Super Bomberman R Online is a literal and figurative blast with its well-adapted gameplay formula as well as its wealth of characters and unlockables. It's a bit buggy in its current state, though, so I hope it gets patched; like... a lot.
Bomberman is fun, it has loyalties to the old games but it also has some issues.

I first played Super Bomberman R Online back in September 2020 when it became a “First to Stadia” exclusive. My experience with the game was exceptional back then but I was left wondering whether it would arrive on other platforms at some stage. Fast forward to 27th May 2021 and we see the introduction of the game to Xbox (including Series S/X), Playstation 4/5, Steam and Nintendo Switch. The great news is that Super Bomberman R online features crossplay. This means we can expect to see busy servers and super quick matchmaking.
I like the principle of Battle Royale in combination with Bomberman quite well, although it takes some time to get into the game. Konami already thought about all the important components at the start: Battle Pass, ranks, cosmetic items, different characters and emotes! I'm sure you'll catch some gamers, including me, and entice them to daddle. The gameplay is fluid, even if it is hectic in some places. But this is not surprising on the small maps and more and more exploding bombs. What I miss is a kind of campaign that you could finish with your friends. Private games can be depicted, but they are something different. For a real bomberman of the old school, I simply lack such content. On the other hand, Super Bomberman R Online doesn't want to be just that anymore and for ~10€ you get a lot of fun and playtime. Stadia Pro users benefit twice as much because the game is included in the membership.
