There is something all encompassing about the darkness in Amnesia: Rebirth. The distinction is how it swells around the player and creeps up the corners of your screen, and how you’re left scrambling over rocks and oddly shaped architecture when resources run thin. I’ve never felt something more complete and simultaneously frustrating in all of my years playing horror games.

Amnesia: Rebirth is a product of a studio maturing into their skills. They’ve mastered the sense of narrative storytelling by crafting beautiful atmospheric environments instead of relying on straight horror. While the pacing can come to a crawl at certain moments, there’s no denying this is a terrifying game that fits well within the developer’s catalog.

Amnesia: Rebirth marks a triumphant return to form for the series, with the horrifying story and eerie atmosphere sure to send plenty of chills down gamers’ spines. Whilst there’s no denying that it doesn’t feel as innovative as it did back in 2010, there’s still scares aplenty as you embark on Tasi’s unnerving journey to not only survive but maintain her sanity at the same time. If you’re eager for an eerie treat this Halloween, you needn’t look any further than Amnesia: Rebirth.

With a muddled story that leaves much unanswered, and a series of half-baked mechanics that feel a decade out of date, it’s hard to recommend Amnesia Rebirth as a way to satisfy your scares this Halloween. You’ll more than likely want to forget all about it.

Amnesia: Rebirth keeps the amnesias essence. You can see the Frictional Games' work evolution here. Recommended for all those who like to explore, experience psychological fear and, to a lesser extent, solve puzzles. Not recommended for those who do not like to live stooped to advance and have a hard time practicing stealth.

Making a sequel to one of the most acclaimed horror games in recent memory may be a tall order for some, but Frictional Games has done it with aplomb with Amnesia: Rebirth. Without straying far from the formula that made Amnesia: The Dark Descent so popular and feared in equal measure-the clever use of jump scares, immersive puzzles and the light-dark dichotomy-Rebirth has reinvigorated its brand of horror with a haunting narrative that's as moving as it is refreshing. Rebirth may still be a bit too much to bear for players who don't usually venture into horror, but it's a sequel that should please ardent fans and horror masochists alike.
