Although the plot can't quite live up to its predecessor's superb twist, it's compelling enough to drive the story over 10 hours to a satisfying conclusion. While Resident Evil Village doesn't add anything transformative to the genre, it liberally pays homage to some of the very best bits from a series that's – incredibly – endured for more than a quarter of a century. If only it had better capitalised on its most striking character. Still, she's a vampire, so maybe next time?

In many ways, Resident Evil Village is a purposefully simplistic game that knows its audience and delivers on its promises. It respects the player’s time by giving them a dense central location to explore and provides a generous supply of resources with which to keep its plot momentum strong. It goes to these lengths so as to ensure players can bask in the set pieces and the absurd heights of its storytelling. The game understands what it wants to do and manages to accomplish it in style.

With as far as Village reaches and as much as it tries to incorporate into one short experience – one playthrough lasted just under 11 hours – it has more successes than shortcomings to show for its efforts. It's not perfect, though it shows how Resident Evil can grow outside of its comfort zones while still managing to pay respects to history and satisfy all types of players.

Resident Evil Village was a joy to play with lots of fun callbacks to past entries regarding gameplay. It feels like a good mix of everything that makes the series great and still truly terrifies. The Duke and his upgrading system made me search every nook and cranny despite how scared I was, and I can’t wait to jump back into this world. There are tons of reasons to replay thanks to all the difficulty options, new weapons and modes, and a plethora of difficulty options. Unfortunately, the story isn’t the most compelling in the series, but a fantastic setting and great atmosphere make up for those shortcomings. Resident Evil Village is a must-play for anyone who likes Resident Evil, or just horror in general.

Resident Evil: Village is a powerful monster, bolting together parts from Resident Evils 7, 4 and more besides. It’s longer than recent games in the series, yet still feels trim and sculpted as it shifts between it wide range of locations and set pieces. The downside of its eclectic approach is some unevenness and less tension, especially in a relatively weak opening act. But its eventual blend of parts is gloriously big, daft and fuelled by the finest of nightmares.

Even though Resident Evil Village turned down the scare factor, it still remains an enjoyable ride from start to finish.

To wrap-up then, Resident Evil Village is a fun game to play for those looking for a less scary experience and one that is not too taxing on the grey matter. It feels like Resident Evil 4 revisited and works using a similar style of gameplay. Fans of the slower-paced survival horror games might feel like this game could quite easily have had its own spin-off series and in some ways we can agree with that sentiment. However, in its own right and for all its theatrics, Village pushes the right buttons where it counts. In many ways it’s liberating to reside on the side of aggressor rather than tortured weakling, and that gets a dismembered thumbs-up from us.

While Village doesn’t reinvent the wheel in the way its predecessor did, it serves as an important stabilizer for the series. It puts Resident Evil on steady ground for the future—one I can’t wait to see.

The gothic horror-style monsters and bosses are not as scary as "Resident Evil 7". However, the next-generation graphics and limited vision is frightening enough. The diverse collectibles in the huge village makes the player want to play the game again after the ending.

Resident Evil Village is a great game that embraces the elements of the series that we know and love while also carving out its own space nestled deep in dark fantasy. In fact, this game beautifully finds a middle ground to please existing fans of the franchise but also serves as a great entry point for new players.

Ethan Winters is having another bad day as he fights to save his daughter in an adventure that has a lot to offer, even if it falls just short of its predecessor.

Resident Evil Village is an exceptional addition to the seminal horror franchise, offering a gratifying balance between atmospheric horror and frantic action alongside captivating villains, an intriguing setting and plenty of fresh ideas. While its story ultimately fails to capitalize on its exciting central mystery, there’s no doubting it’s one of the series’ most compelling iterations in years.

Resident Evil Village has some of the biggest scares in the series to date, but it also has a peculiar feel to it, like a lot of story and gameplay was chopped out before launch.

Resident Evil Village is a far cry from its more grounded and horror-focused predecessor, but in the end, it’s perhaps just as lovable. At times it feels like a greatest hits collection of some of the best elements of previous Resident Evil games, and while that leads to it not being wholly coherent, it’s not to its detriment. It may not be perfect in terms of combat mechanics and storytelling, but Resident Evil Village keeps you on your toes, with you never truly knowing what’s waiting for you around the next corner. And that’s why when playing it, the hours simply fly by. Will the series ever become stale? Not while it’s being as inventive as this, that’s for sure.

Resident Evil has been on a hot streak with 7 and the remakes of the second and third games. Village is out now, and the bar is set mighty high. With the franchise having a wide range that it offers its fans, from more action-oriented entries to more horror-focused, which will this fall into? Also, how will it stack up to the recent top-notch entries?
