Samurai Warriors 5 makes the series stand out from Koei’s other games and updates the musou formula in smart ways, but unfortunately cuts too much of what worked in the past to make it universally recommendable to hardcore fans.

Samurai Warriors 5 is a videogame and a Musou that lives of alternances. A deep story is incapsulated in a radiophonic narrative, a captivating aestethic pairs with a low poligonal count and a funny and solid fighting system clashes with a gameplay full of repetitiveness. Koei has made an inspired re-immagination of his franchise, but his experiment is only an half success. Not the worst Samurai Warriors ever made, but neither the best.

Samurai Warriors 5 is an ambitious reboot, removing many features from previous games while emphasising what makes the series tick. There is very little to do outside combat, but the combat is delightful, and the variety between characters makes each one a joy to play. Despite some superfluous systems and clunky camera and AI issues, Samurai Warriors 5 offers fantastic action gameplay. If you’ve been intimidated by the Warriors series in the past, this is a great place to hop on.

For musou game fans, Samurai Warriors 5 is a strong return to form for Koei Tecmo and Omega Force. The game is not a complete revolution, but provides an enjoyable hack and slash experience that understands why the Warriors games are popular. It's often silly, and hardly clever, but it's an enjoyable action game for those who want some mindless fun.

Samurai Warriors 5 scratches the Musou itch but doesn't do too much to mix up the formula.

Samurai Warriors 5 won't shock anyone who's played one of Omega Force's Warriors games before, but it does present a great new style and enough over-the-top action to keep you coming back.

Samurai Warriors 5 doesn’t break the mold set by its many, many forebears, but it still manages to polish its edges, becoming a striking, feature-rich action game.

If you didn’t like the series before, you won’t like this entry, and if you did like the series before, you’ll probably love having more of the same.

Samurai Warriors tries to approach the younger audience and does so with a more attractive graphic style and youthful designs. The gameplay has hardly changed and has been cut both in game modes and in the number of playable characters, but even so, it continues to offer great entertainment for fans of the musou.

Samurai Warriors 5 tells a beautiful story of an important historical event, and even though some old and familiar issues are still here, the final package is an entertaining Mosou style game.

Samurai Warriors 5 is a game that you can play continuously for a few hours maybe days but then you put it away for a while until you are in the mood again. Less than an hour into each playthrough, we’d start to groan and wish for the story to get to the point so we could resume combat. After a while, combat loses its flare. The game is great for running around and killing things when you have the urge to hack and slash, but sadly it gets stale. If you are looking for a Hack and Slash that makes you feel like a god, then playing SW5 on Easy mode will do just that. With a variety of characters to choose between, you can get hours of gameplay out of Samurai Warriors 5 if you choose. Ultimately, Samurai Warriors 5 can be purchased for $60 if it is a genre you enjoy; however, if you are new to the genre, it might be worth waiting until it goes on sale. With the sheer amount of missions, fighting styles, and characters, it is definitely worth $40. If you have any hesitation towards picking up this game, definitely watch gameplay videos or other players’ walkthroughs to see if it is something you will enjoy. Are you a fan of Musou games? Do you plan on picking this one up? Let us know what you think after giving it a try. We could see Samurai Warriors 5 ending up on Xbox Game Pass in the near future.

Samurai Warriors 5 is the ideal chapter to approach the franchise for the first time and retrace the exploits of the valiant leaders who lived during the Sengoku era of feudal Japan. The greater attention paid to the story and the choice to focus the plot on the charismatic figures of Oda Nobunaga and his vassal Mitsuhide Akechi have certainly benefited the general quality of the story, which never before has proved to be as compelling and full of twists and turns.

Samurai Warriors 5 leaves the dissapointing last entry in the series behind it and offers similar to the quality of Warriors Orochi 4 the usual mass battles without an open world. The new art style is fitting for the setting and the new gameplay elements offer a lot of fun. Besides the big battles, the game fights with laborious menu controls and ressource managament, which could have been left out of the game. If you like musou games you still should definitely check it out.

Rich in content and with an excellent artistic direction, Samurai Warriors 5 is aimed at a specific group of fans, but does not disdain to tickle the newbies.

It’s fairly reasonable to say that I have a fondness for the Samurai Warriors franchise, and in terms of actual combat this game also delivers in spades when it comes to style and intensity. One also accepts having to slog through the drawn-out and sometimes tedious process of acquiring resources (to upgrade player stats and weapons for greater combat effectiveness) — but the one thing that made the drudgery more bearable, like the interactivity and humor behind the process in Samurai Warriors: Spirit of Sanada, is sadly lacking in this game. In spite of this shortcoming, Samurai Warriors 5 is still an exhilarating and visually arresting adventure through the chaos and political vortex of Sengoku period Japan.

Thanks to its addictive combat, involving plot, and even a new venture into a mode that acts as a tower defense game, Samurai Warriors 5 is a very welcome arrival to the Nintendo Switch catalogue in the hack & slash genre.

Musou games work because there’s nothing else like them, and the steps forward here have more to do with structure and presentation than gameplay. And that totally works.

Samurai Warriors 5 is one of the best games I’ve played this year. I didn’t think I would be saying this when I started playing it, but the more I experienced this title the more I got into it. That’s a rare thing for me in gaming these days, and I’m very thankful when it happens. The art style, storytelling, and music are all top tier. While the combat hasn’t changed a whole lot, the tweaks make it fast and a ton of fun. I do wish there were more weapons and characters to choose from, since this series has a ton of both that didn’t make the cut here, but this a great start for a refresh of the series. If you are a fan of Samurai Warriors, pick this one up today at the $59.99 price tag and you will be very satisfied with this entry. If you have never picked up one of these games before, this is a fantastic starting point for you. If Koei Tecmo keeps up this level of quality, this series has a bright future ahead of it.
