An experience that put's little on the horror and more fun on the story twists, especially in its end, and will undoubtedly give you the best of what it can over when you go through solving puzzles and discovering its beautiful innovations that encourage you to search and explore the area around you. The game's simple and limited design, unfortunately, comes into play when it comes to graphics details, exploration mechanics, and bits that look flawed and incomplete. However, you might be able to forgive that given the price tag.

An adventure with good intentions and desire to move to classic terror, but that derails in the technical and in the design of several tests. I needed more testing, clearly.

Charon’s Staircase is more a thriller than a horror with a very intriguing story that has some pretty cool twists. Some of the puzzles are a bit ambiguous and will leave you scratching your head, but in the end you’ll have experienced another treasure of storytelling from the minds of a talented and dedicated smaller studio.

Charon’s Staircase doesn’t exactly redefine the horror genre. It looks a bit rough, and its tried-and-tested gameplay doesn’t break any moulds. But the majority of its puzzles will keep you hooked, its story is interesting, and it absolutely nails creating a tense, horrifying atmosphere. That alone makes this a spooky adventure worth stepping into.

Charon’s Staircase is an experience that leaves a mark – not through spectacle or shocking plot twists, but through the depth with which it explores universal and timely themes. It is a game about power, obedience, memory, and, above all, lost humanity. Its deliberate, unhurried pace reinforces this message: every step through Oack Grove is a step into the mind of someone confronting uncomfortable truths. What impresses most is the harmony between form and intent. Visuals, sound, gameplay, and writing all serve a unified vision: horror not as an event, but as a psychological condition. Charon’s Staircase does not chase jump-scares; it prefers to unsettle, to provoke reflection, and to push the player toward their own confrontation with evil. While the game has its imperfections, these are easily outweighed by its ambition. Its strength lies in suggestion rather than exposition, in evocation rather than explanation. It moves with a measured, deliberate pace, leaving behind a rich trail of images, sounds, and ideas that linger long after the credits roll. I approached it with scepticism, half-expecting little beyond standard indie horror fare. What I found instead was a work compelling not for its technical polish, which can feel dated, but for its storytelling, tone, and subtle approach to fear. Free of common genre clichés, Charon’s Staircase draws the player into a quiet, introspective journey that reminds us how confronting uncomfortable truths can unsettle us – and change us – if we allow it. For horror enthusiasts who value mood, psychology, and thematic depth, this is an easy recommendation. Its brief two-to-three-hour runtime leaves an impression far larger than its length suggests.

As the moments of survival or danger are minimal, I believe that Charon's Staircase does not stand out so much within the horror genre. However, for those who like narratives full of mysteries and puzzles, the title delivers a very well-built plot and equally creative puzzles.

Charon's Staircase presents itself as a mystery experience first, and a horror game later. We get a few good scares along the way, but the real focus is on discovering the secrets that Oak Grove hides and uncovering the past of the mysterious abandoned area.

Charon's Staircase is a classic horror puzzle title with a thriller twist. It plays the part perfectly with cliched jump scares and a sinister atmosphere. However, its limited replay value and well-trodden mechanics leave you feeling underwhelmed.

If you are someone who enjoys puzzles that require exploration and attention, this may be your game. If you want an interesting and destructive story, even if it is with a hole in its script too.

Confused puzzles, a convoluted story, poor use of lighting and no real scares makes Charon’s Staircase a good reason for taking the escalator instead.
