Critic Reviews for Montezuma's Revenge - The 40th Anniversary Edition
I really tried to appreciate the fact another classic gaming franchise from the earlier days of the medium was finally making a comeback, cementing its legacy, but I had a miserable time playing Montezuma’s Revenge: The 40th Anniversary Edition. It’s buggy, confusing, and uninspired. It’s easy to forgive the clunkiness of the original, since it was released more than 40 years ago, but we expect quality of life enhancements from a fully-fledged remake. There are none.
Montezuma’s Revenge: The 40th Anniversary Edition is a faithful celebration of a gaming classic. The retro gameplay is intact, offering the same sense of challenge and reward that made the original so beloved. With its accessible features and expanded content the game appeals to both old-school fans and new players willing to embrace its retro charm. That said, its visual update feels hit-or-miss, and the difficulty level may deter some players. Still, for those who love high-score chasing and mastering tough platformers, this game delivers a rewarding, nostalgic experience
Montezuma’s Revenge – The 40th Anniversary Edition can please both those who lived through the golden age of gaming and new adventurers who enjoy the metroidvania style and the difficulty of soulslikes.
