Montezuma's Revenge - The 40th Anniversary Edition Reviews
Montezuma’s Revenge: The 40th Anniversary Edition brings back a classic with a bigger adventure and a lot of nostalgic charm. It has simple controls, a tough challenge, and a faithful recreation of the original experience. At the same time, the small fall distance, basic instructions, control issues, and visual blending can make it frustrating. It is a solid return for fans who want a difficult action platformer with a retro feel.
Montezuma's Revenge – The 40th Anniversary Edition is not a pleasant experience. That may be the point, judging from the title. But, save for one key decision, the updates here somehow make this version seem even more dated than the 1984 original.
No amount of misty-eyed nostalgia can save this stinker of a remake.
A nostalgic revival weighed down by frustrating mechanics and dated design.
Mission Critical Studios and Eastasiasoft Limited bring us back a polished gem, ready to be enjoyed.

Montezuma's Revenge's archaic 'flash game' look and production feels more in place somewhere in the early 2000's than 2025, which weird to say about a release that is supposed to celebrate and revive an 40 year-old franchise. That said, it meticulously stuck to the original mechanics and character behaviour making it at least authentic while playing, which should trigger veteran players muscle memory quite easily. The big question for fans is if they would rather play this production or search out the originals, which would be a choice between ease of play or the authentic nostalgia with some of the quirks of a mid eighties video game.
I can only recommend Montezuma’s Revenge – The 40th Anniversary Edition if you are familiar with the original game and already know what you are getting into or are looking for a challenge that, many people have tried and failed to beat. It’s definitely not for everyone, so if there is interest, proceed with caution.
“Montezuma’s Revenge – The 40th Anniversary Edition” is a game that brings the difficulty of 80s gaming into the now. If you played the original or are looking for an old-school challenge, “Montezuma’s Revenge – The 40th Anniversary Edition” is a game that may give you the shits, but it’ll be up to you to decide if the journey is worth it.
This 40th Anniversary edition somehow manages to be outright terrible in so many ways. No D-Pad controls, weird input timing, one of the most hideous presentations I’ve ever dealt with here on SFG, and a lot of baffling design choices led to this remake being pretty darn infuriating and very unfun to play.
Montezuma’s Revenge – The 40th Anniversary Edition can please both those who lived through the golden age of gaming and new adventurers who enjoy the metroidvania style and the difficulty of soulslikes.

Montezuma’s Revenge: The 40th Anniversary Edition is a faithful celebration of a gaming classic. The retro gameplay is intact, offering the same sense of challenge and reward that made the original so beloved. With its accessible features and expanded content the game appeals to both old-school fans and new players willing to embrace its retro charm. That said, its visual update feels hit-or-miss, and the difficulty level may deter some players. Still, for those who love high-score chasing and mastering tough platformers, this game delivers a rewarding, nostalgic experience
I really tried to appreciate the fact another classic gaming franchise from the earlier days of the medium was finally making a comeback, cementing its legacy, but I had a miserable time playing Montezuma’s Revenge: The 40th Anniversary Edition. It’s buggy, confusing, and uninspired. It’s easy to forgive the clunkiness of the original, since it was released more than 40 years ago, but we expect quality of life enhancements from a fully-fledged remake. There are none.
