More thoughtful than its contemporaries and less spiteful than its premise, I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream is a flawed but essential '90s adventure if only to join in one of gaming’s most interesting conversations.

This is a game that may not be for everyone - but it really should be played by most. It is an amazing story that’s been wonderfully realised, it is powerful, and scary, and really makes you think. I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream has top notch voice acting and the biggest problem that plagues it is easily alleviated with modern access to guides. I highly recommend experiencing this at least once, but I also recommend the original short story and listening to some Harlan Ellison interviews as well. I look forward to revisiting this in another ten years.

I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream is a solid port of a classic point-and-click adventure game, co-designed by author Harlan Ellison, with enough alterations to make gameplay surprising even for those who've read the original story.

Despite the controls, there is nothing to criticize about this port. The fact that the game itself is full of illogical puzzles is a given. That is why this is such a curious port. 'I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream' will be great for horror fans, but as a game it is difficult to recommend. If you are interested in the story, read the original. It is widely available. Then play the game, if you want to see more of this world. If you then constantly get stuck on the puzzles, use a walkthrough, because the story is ultimately worth it.

I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream is available in good shape for a new generation, one that is finally discovering the magnitude of its legacy and forming a fanbase around IHNMAIMS. Of course, some additional content, translation and touch support would be welcome, but just having this classic in your hands (literally) is already an achievement.

I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream is still a horrifying, upsetting, and engrossing experience, even today. Few things have struck me as strongly, and being able to relive the trauma and the painstaking moments of discovery are satisfying as they ever were. For new players to be able to delve into something that is such a phenomenal interpretation of a great story, crafted by the author himself, cannot be overstated.
