Despite the introduction of a well-written new character like Lodi and the presence of the Nine, the gameplay in The Edge of Fate proves to be extremely repetitive, with dull puzzles and fetch quests that slow down the action. The Desert Perpetual raid offers a few interesting ideas, but the campaign feels shallow and lacking in narrative momentum, leaving the impression of filler content.

With how much has changed in Destiny, it's hard to see the forest through the trees. Everything I thought I knew, from what was good to what to focus on, has been overhauled. This was initially jarring, but the longer I spend with it, the more I come to like it. Much like the start of a new show, you can tell there is something more; however, you're only left with more questions. While this explanation is small, the universe it opens is vast.

Building on the saga's excellent conclusion in The Final Shape, Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate serves as both a mediocre epilogue and a promising but uncertain reboot. Ultimately, it's less interesting in its own right, both in terms of narrative and the sloppy use of the few new mechanics introduced.

Bungie continues its streak of developing phenomenal content with live-service elements that actively work to undermine it. Destiny 2: Edge of Fate's main campaign has plenty of highs, but sticking with the game long-term at this point means dealing with Bungie's eclecticisms, and odds are that you've got no patience for that.
