Critic Reviews for Detective Instinct: Farewell, My Beloved
A love letter to all our favourite mystery series of the past, Detective Instinct: Farewell My Beloved is easy to get engrossed in. With expressive characters and a gorgeously rendered environment, fans of mystery games will love letting the tale unravel with intuitive ‘talk and search’ gameplay. It tackles tricky societal themes with moderate success, only falling short in the later chapters with some missing emotional stakes, but otherwise wraps up its bite-sized revelation with thoughtful grace.
Detective Instinct: Farewell, My Beloved tells a concise yet compelling mystery.
An old-school-inspired adventure game visual novel experience now ready for you on Nintendo Switch
Detective Instinct: Farewell, My Beloved is a competent adventure game, capable of pleasing both newcomers and veterans. It features a well-constructed world, well-developed characters, and a very pleasing aesthetic. My main criticism is that it rarely manages to be more than just the sum of its parts: it's a well-executed game, but it doesn't stand out in any specific aspect when compared to other well-established games in the genre. It's ideal for those who want to discover if the genre is for them, especially since it's short and easy. Veterans should also enjoy it, although they may feel that Detective Instinct doesn't offer anything that other more acclaimed titles haven't already done.

Detective Instinct: Farewell, My Beloved drinks from rich fountains and perfectly understands its nutritional values, bringing its own contributions to the mystery genre and not limiting itself to merely copying what worked in the past. It is a graduation from fan to author that could have very well lost itself in fascination; thanks to its own strong beliefs, it gracefully avoids such a fate.

Beyond its classic aesthetic, the game delivers a touching story about lost loves, geopolitical conflicts, and the consequences for those who are the greatest victims of these issues.

Detective Instinct: Farewell, My Beloved is a tightly crafted indie mystery that succeeds in laying the groundwork for a compelling series. With a focus on accessibility, charming writing, and steady pacing, Armonica delivers a memorable first entry that favors story and clarity over difficulty. While some systems lack polish and a few moments feel overly guided, the game’s heartfelt approach and strong character work make it a standout for fans of narrative-driven adventures.
Detective Instinct: Farewell, My Beloved never really tries to venture too far from its inspirations, but emulates them with a lot of heart. The presentation and story work together well to provide an interesting, if perhaps not the most thrilling mystery. Those looking to relax with an enjoyable mystery will find plenty to like here.
