Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns can still be a bit obtuse at times, but makes up for it with fresh QoL improvements and a genuinely interesting new game mode.
This is a compilation of three quite distinct games that, while sharing the same theme and foundation, feature different mechanics. The Retro mode serves as a nostalgic nod to the original, whereas the Classic mode enhances and enriches the experience with new elements and improved gameplay. The Kingdom mode'with its dice and cards'is a completely different beast and will likely appeal only to a specific group of players. Overall, however, it is a legendary title presented in exceptional style.

There is a lot that can be done with Defender of the Crown, so while I’m very happy to have the original game playable on my Switch, practically speaking, this game is like buying a retro game, I can’t help but feel that this was a wasted opportunity, overall.
Defender of the Crown: The Legend Return will likely appeal differently depending on your familiarity with the original. Retro is best for longtime fans seeking an authentic experience, while Classic provides some welcome improvements without fully addressing the original's obtuse mechanics. Both modes can therefore be difficult for newcomers to appreciate. Kingdom is the game's saving grace, streamlining the experience into an addictive strategy loop where even defeat contributes to future runs. That mode alone makes the game worth recommending to anyone looking for light strategy, although the overall package should still be approached with some caution. What appears to be a simple strategy game can be surprisingly, and sometimes unintentionally, brutal.

Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns is a loving, faithful revival of a 40-year-old classic that finally gives its combat and presentation the polish they always deserved. It struggles to explain its own systems and the roguelite mode can be brutally unfair, but once its rhythm clicks, this medieval board game of a strategy title is hard to put down.
