'The Flame in the Flood' hits the nail on the head with its crafty survival gameplay and inspired visual and audio design. At times, especially early on, nothing seems more dangerous than the river, but overall this might be game to get players into the roguelike genre. The technical side lags a bit behind the creative side, but not enough to capsize it.
"Navigating the hazardous river is no small feat with horrible steering until you are able to upgrade to a rudder, however, the river poses a challenge that carries with it, its own rewards. Although there is little in the way of narrative throughout the story I found myself sharing a bond with the games characters".
Set in a rural post-societal America, The Flame in the Flood is one part Noah's Ark, one part Oregon Trail, and two parts grit and determination.
I really enjoyed playing The Flame and the Flood, I loved the overall design and the survival elements that it brings. The game is unforgiving and if you don't listen to the hints that are given with the crafting and food, you will get punished.
Challenging for even the most experienced survival game player, The Flame in The Flood is a fantastic experience. Just don't expect it to be painless.
Undoubtedly it’s one of the more clever games that I’ve played in many years. Many have compared The Flame in the Flood with Don’t Starve due to the nature of both games, but I’ve found this gameplay experience quite unique.

On the surface, it appears to be a charming, survival title. That's merely a ruse, as The Flame in the Flood is ruthless in difficulty, at least for the first few hours. Overall, it's a great, enjoyable game, though the experience can wear a little thin after a while.
The post-societal visuals of crumbling buildings, broken-down cars drifting along the flooded river, and menacing wildlife lurking in the distance, paired with an excellent folk rock soundtrack featuring Chuck Ragan, creates a unique atmosphere of exploring a desolate frontier. It's easy to become absorbed in this world and end up spending much more time on this treacherous river than you initially intended. That is, until it swiftly kills you without remorse. It seems mother nature is a cruel mistress indeed.
Great art, a brilliant soundtrack and a challenging, rewarding survival experience awaits those who have the patience.
The Flame in the Flood is an incredibly charming survival game. Even those that don't tend to love the harsh genre will enjoy the visual flair and fantastic soundtrack on offer. There's also several different options to make the game more difficult or easier (checkpoints can be added) depending on how much of a challenge you want. Whether players actually complete their trip will come down to their determination, but they'll have a good time, even if the rafting session ends a bit early due to a wolf attack.
As I rafted lazily down the river, passing churches and camp grounds, I found a moment or two to reflect on my time with The Flame in the Flood. I wonder "How much time have I spent with in-game menus?," "I wonder how far I can make it before my resources run dry?," and "How in the world can anyone kill a bear?" The game had lost its challenge an hour or so ago, but I remembered my first 10 or so hours fondly as constantly challenging and enjoyably tense. And while I don't see myself playing the game for too much longer, the The Flame in the Flood is a solid recommendation for anyone looking to diversify their catalog with a short, challenging, and artistically crafted indie title.
The Flame in the Flood delivers exceptionally inventive gameplay with original graphics and sadly, some serious bugs. Without them, we could have one of the best games in genre.

I enjoyed my time with The Flame in the Flood, especially after researching the crafting options and mentally creating a list of objectives that I felt would lead me to success.
The Flame in the Flood is a survival game for people who may not like survival games. There is enough information to keep you from being continuously frustrated, but it does not completely hold your hand. The world and music add to its unique character, and the different modes will allow you to play at the difficulty you want. If you like survival games, I recommend you give it a try.
Flame in the Flood is Don’t Starve meets Toobin,’ and for the most part, it works. It’s beautiful, stylish, fun, difficult, frustrating, and overall well worth checking out for fans of both survival sims and stylish indies.
The Flame in the Flood is a beautiful procedurally generated survival sim that gains a welcome sense of momentum from the need to stay on the move. Its unwieldy menus and tendency to crash ruins some of the fun, unfortunately, but not enough to diminish the strength of the hopeful, riverbound journey at its core.
The Flame in the Flood is a strange survival roguelite. Despite an interesting setting and a charming OST, the game lacks in offering a balanced gameplay, mostly becouse of the high incidence of random events.
