Despite the microtransactions, the game is still a lot of fun, the driving is nice and easy to lose yourself in, especially with the varying environments and the open world challenges. Pushing yourself to get those 3 star ratings can be extremely fun, and the story is engaging and looks amazing all the while. I would love to be able to shout at you, screaming, “GO GET THIS GAME”! But it’s just not good enough for that; while I do recommend the game. I can’t say that its worth £50.

It can feel like a bit of a drag at times unless you enjoy cruising the open world.

Despite high hopes, Need for Speed Payback comes up short. It might be at home in a 1980s arcade, but we expect more from racing games these days and unfortunately, an extra year in deployment wasn’t enough to save this interaction from franchise fatigued.

Need for Speed Payback successfully returns to its Fast and Furious roots with aplomb, but a focus on the grind and a beautiful but empty world means it ultimately falls short of greatness.

Like the so-called reboot from 2015, Need for Speed Payback is better and more fun than it really should be. In fact, Ghost Games latest creation is the most entertaining Need for Speed game for many years, making it an extra pity that the final polish is missing.

Need for Speed Payback is a well-designed sandbox that's at its most entertaining when you ignore what's supposed to be the core of the game. The story is dud, and the game's Ultimate Team-inspired upgrade system is an attempt to force a square peg into a round hole, but there's no denying tearing down desert roads at 180 mph in a souped-up 1965 Mustang is a blast. Need for Speed Payback is a fun joyride, but it doesn't quite hold up over the long haul.

If Ghost Games can find a way to properly refine and execute their ideas, they're on track to something great. Need for Speed: Payback, however, finishes in the middle of the pack, and that's a damn shame.

Need For Speed Payback is a mixed bag. One the one hand it’s a fun arcade racer with great customization, a wide range of cars and race styles and some truly great single player moments. Yet with the other hand holding an underwhelming multiplayer experience, lather, rinse repeat story missions, and some awkward storytelling pacing, NFS never seems to hit top gear in its goal to capture the glory of the old days.

Arcade racing is what has defined Need for Speed since its creation, and Payback is not an exception to this rule. However, due unbalanced progression and the irrelevant single player campaign, this new iteration seem rather uninspired and lackluster.

Need for Speed Payback is a well made arcade racing experience that is somewhat held back by a terrible progression system.

Electronic Arts and developer Ghost Games took a break from the Need for Speed series last year because of various negative feedback and the Need for Speed team decided to go back to the drawing board. Payback features the largest open world than any of the previous Need for Speeds has seen and includes different varieties of racing. The most noticeable change to the 2017 version is the revenge-driven story, which almost mimics car racing movies like Gone in 60 seconds and Fast and the Furious.

Need For Speed Payback is a game lost trying to do everything at once, ultimately giving you an uninspired arcade racing title. It's almost as the franchise forgot the simplest beauty of what it was: a racing game full of speed and its thrills.

Need for Speed Payback tried to do a lot of new things without succeeding in any of them as needed. I have no problem with games get some ideas from each other, which is what the game has done here, which quoted many things from Forza Horizon 3. On the other hand it removed some of the essentials in the franchise, such as the famous cops chases, it is now more like passing through certain checkpoints to escape cops cars. The game also features great cars customization options but offers the worst car upgrade method available in any racing game.

A step back that betrays the good gameplay of the series and the excellent achievements of the 2015 reboot.

Get past some of the poor design ideas, which feels more like an EA intervention than anything else, and there’s a really solid, fun arcade racing game here that’s highly enjoyable.

Need For Speed Payback doesn't do many favors for itself. It's a fun racing game whose flashy story would be fine if I felt like I was building a blinged-out career worthy of it. Instead, I felt driven toward pure stats upgrades, heedless of what the car was or what it looked like.

Predominantly a game that is trying to do too many things at once. Unfortunately, it fails to stand out in any one area.

Need for Speed does not take advantage of the two-year break to present a game that involves a clear step forward in the series, staying as a simple driving arcade that does more things wrong than good.
