Doom VFR Reviews
A snappy, blood-soaked three-hour thrill-ride sure to please any VR owners looking to get some extra use from their doubtless dust-covered PSVR Aim controllers.
It was a very good idea to try and do something new with Doom VFR instead of just porting Doom 2016 straight to VR platforms. While it’s not as good as it’s regular counterpart, seeing the familiar and classic areas alike in full VR is a great experience, even if it can be greatly hindered at times by its controls.
Doom VFR is a good attempt but I feel the game fell short due to issues that could/should have been resolved. What makes an FPS game great isn't its story or the pretty graphics, it's the controls. You need to have rock-solid controls in a game like this in order to fully immerse yourself and control whats going on around you. Having the three methods with no way to customise them let the game down and really impacted on my overall experience.
It has the classic elements of a DOOM game, immersing the player in the DOOM world.
If you can get to grips with the control system or if you are one of the lucky few that managed to get a PS Aim controller, Doom VFR is a fun and addictive game that you will want to play . My first play through was meant to be a quick one hour try of the game and I just could not put it down. The graphics in model detail and animations make this the most visually impressive PSVR titles I have played, but I do not see me replaying the game anytime soon.
Doom VFR is a fun but a short experience that comes bundled with debatable controller options and level layouts you would have experienced in the 2016 classic over a year ago.
The game ranges from 2.5 – 6 hours, depending on if you’re looking to find all of the secrets and collectibles which are on offer. While it is relatively short offering, the game is fun to play as all of the mechanics just work in VR. If you’re looking for VR title to jump into that is oozing with quality and isn’t watered down then DOOM VFR is going to meet your expectations. It’s worth mentioning that this is my first DOOM title which I’ve experienced and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time, so don’t be put off and dive straight in.
Some design decisions have hampered the DOOM VFR experience, but when you’re locked in an arena with the spawn of hell coming for you, the fight for survival carries you through the experience. It’s a very familiar game but if you were a fan of the 2016 release, and you’re like me then you’ll be happy to return to the fray… just don’t have too much to eat before playing.
DOOM VFR looks like DOOM, and often feels like DOOM. Unfortunately, it is severely hampered by its controls.
