There may be some faults with its modes and options, but that doesn’t make the meter-based tennis any less fun for local and online matches. It’s the perfect step forward for the series, even if it doesn’t manage to overtake all of its predecessors.

A great entry into an already beloved franchise, Mario Tennis Aces introduces a brand new tennis mechanic that although is difficult to master, superb visuals and a brand new adventure mode. However, those gamers looking to play this solo will struggle to find anything worthwhile due to the huge focus of both online and local multiplayer.

Dripping with Mario styled graphic colours, and featuring all of Mario's favourite friends and foes in typically Mario styled settings, Mario Tennis Aces is an extremely fun arcade tennis experience for both the serious and not so serious among us. Solid tennis mechanics underneath a playful and entertaining surface means that this will quickly become a fan favourite when friends come around. While the simple single-player mode is somewhat varied, the lack of depth will eventually find the game running out of steam. But the frantic tennis fun with friends makes this a must have title for any Nintendo Switch owner.

I feel Mario Tennis Aces is a leap in the right direction for Camelot. With incredibly fun additions to the series, as well as a natural means of learning and reinforcing their use, you have an intense online experience with the training needed for you to be comfortable playing against others. If you can get past the short adventure mode and enjoy playing with people around the world, you will find yourself here a wonderfully refined tennis experience that pulls out all the stops to feel fluid and look divine.

Mario Tennis Aces is great correction of mistakes after failed Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash and better game than Mario Tennis Open. Despite the meager campaign, lack of mini-games and limited settings for matches, Mario Tennis is a great and complex multiplayer project that can deliver a lot of fun.

Things do pick up once the matches get serious. The variations in each level are a great change of pace, and cycling through the power moves and special shots can be really satisfying once you built up the dexterity and reflexes to pull them off. It's just such a shame that you have to skip through so much of the game just to play it. When I actually get to play Mario Tennis Aces, I really enjoy it. But it lacks the luster of that high quality Nintendo shine.

Mario Tennis Aces improves just about every aspect which fans found disappointing about Ultra Smash. Tournament mode makes a triumphant return which is accompanied by online tournaments with decent and quick matchmaking. The title also comes packed with an extensive single player experience which does a good job of honing in your tennis skills, a incredibly fun mode that solely uses motion controls, as well as brand new powerful techniques that help to vary the gameplay further. The game can also still appeal to the tennis purist as almost all modes allow you to completely remove gimmicks from the court. Unfortunately there are a few decisions that honestly make no sense, such as not being able to determine the amount of sets to play in free play, though luckily this isn’t enough to deter me from the title.

Mario Tennis Aces can quickly get very competitive and addictive, but equally that desire can soon turn to frustration. But unquestionably, Mario Tennis Aces is the best Tennis game in recent memory and is likely to be unmatched for quite some time to come.

Mario Tennis Aces is another great arcade tennis game in the Mario Tennis franchise. It’s an absolute joy to play and it’s gameplay feels fun, rewarding and has a good balance of accessible fun and challenging difficulty, for the most part. While I would have loved a longer single player campaign and more to do after I had finished it, it’s multiplayer mode will offer near endless enjoyment for those that enjoy playing online whether that be casually or competitively. Fingers crossed we get some new characters, courts and rackets to unlock down the line.

All in all, Mario Tennis Aces is a fairly enjoyable game, even with the ever present rubber-band AI.

The challenges on offer are difficult but fun, and they'll keep you going back until you master them. You can't really expect any more than that.

Mario Tennis Aces is a great return for the racket-wielding plumber and friends. If you are looking for purely a single player experience, hold back on this game for now as you won't find much. For those with friends or a competitive spirit, this is one tennis game that you don't want to miss out on.

Mario Tennis Aces can be frustrating and challenging, but local multiplayer is still a lot of fun, and there is a lot of content to enjoy.

Overall, Mario Tennis Aces is a decent game. It's not great, but it could be with some tweaks here and there. If you're looking for a decent new multiplayer game to add to your Switch library, it's certainly worth a look. Unfortunately, for the content offered, $60 is a bit much. It felt like Nintendo was really trying to stuff in some extra modes to warrant that price tag, but I don't think it feels like a complete package. Its core gameplay is fun, but I would wait for a sale.

Mario Tennis Aces is an exceptional tennis game at its core, with fun additional layers to keep things interesting. The inclusion of Adventure Mode is also very much appreciated, adding a good little set of more varied objectives to reach. The limited levelling system and frustrating difficulty issues of the single-player, on the other hand, leave it falling short – albeit on a great trajectory. For anyone who’s into Mario Tennis or even just likes the idea, this is a great one. For anyone who isn’t sold, I can’t see this changing their mind.
