Hyper Sentinel Reviews
Hyper Sentinel is 'neo-retro' executed to perfection. Once you accept that the visual and audio directions are both design choices made to pay tribute to the original Commodore 64 game and sit down to take on your first Super-Dreadnought, you'll be hooked. Every time you get a 'Game Over', the only thing on your mind will be on how to prevent whatever got the best of you in preparation of your next sortie (while, at the same, time browsing the leaderboards to see how your friends are faring in each level).
A pretty straightforward modernising of a fondly remembered 1980s shoot 'em up that successfully adds a handful of modern bells, whistles and gameplay wrinkles to proceedings whilst also suffering somewhat from the inherent gameplay restrictions of its source material.
An amiable but underwhelming homage to the forgotten majesty of Uridium, that adds some welcome new ideas but removes too many of the old ones.
Though things can often get a little too crazy, Hyper Sentinel's mostly satisfying gameplay and excellent presentation make it a fantastic choice for retro gaming fans.
Hyper Sentinel is an exclusive club. Its simple fun can be enjoyed by outsiders, but the players who will appreciate it the most have played 1986's Uridium or other shoot 'em ups from the same time period.
If you’re a fan of old-school overhead shoot ‘em ups, then you’re going to love this arcade take on the formula as you take on its 12 stages with three different difficulty settings and three gameplay modes!
Hyper Sentinel is a fun arcade release on PlayStation 4 that offers more than enough content for its asking price. With Arcade, Survival and Boss modes, as well as the many trophies tied to them, there is plenty to do with this homage to the good old days of the C64. Go check it out!
There is a clear sense of passion here delivered through pure fun. The developers were successful in creating a new take on concepts originally conceived decades ago. This new shoot-‘em-up not only celebrates its predecessor but delivers a colorful, energetic experience that isn't easy to put down.
It's definitely a solid fast-paced arcade shooter but Hyper Sentinel also tends to devolve into a needlessly frustrating experience.
Great horizontal shoot-em-up played from a top-down perspective that pas homage to classics of the past
Hyper Sentinel does a great job of bringing a classic formula into the modern world of gaming. Its addictive and fast gameplay sinks that hook deep enough into those who want to make a dent on the online leaderboards.
The game is a great piece of nostalgia but it always feels slightly inadequate compared to the original, and while it is great for Uridium fans stepping into the 21st Century it is hard to see where it will gain new fans. Where 8 year old me thought Uridium was the greatest game in the world, Hyper Sentinel is a good tribute but doesn't get close.
Overall, Hyper Sentinel is a real treat for fans of retro gaming as it celebrates so many things, including the look, the absolutely excellent music, and a challenging style of play that will never go out of style. The fact that time was spent to layer in modern graphical touches that look incredible but don’t overshadow the retro look is very much appreciated and the sheer volume of insanity regularly on-screen more than demonstrates this game couldn’t have been possible back in the day. If you’re a retro gaming fanatic, or appreciate a good and challenging arcade-style shooter, Hyper Sentinel is highly recommended.
Hyper Sentinel is a fun, simple and different take on this type of classic space shooter.
a game steeped in the ever-present nostalgia factor with a few fresh ideas thrown in for good measure. To really blow us away it would have been nice to see the game break the mould a bit more, but for many a title which makes retro-style games accessible, and slightly more forgiving, to younger audiences and new players is no bad thing.
