The Sinking City is probably the Lovecraft inspired game currently available on the market, thanks to its oppressive atmosphere and its story, which utilizes the lore masterfully without deviating from the canon. AI and technical issues, as well as the clunky combat, are often immersion breaking, but the excellent investigation mechanics and exploration features make it easy to look past these issues. Highly recommended to survival horror fans and those who live and breath Lovecraft. The links above are affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate, Wccftech.com may earn from qualifying purchases.

The Sinking City invites all the horror of a lovecraftian tale, with the balance to know more of what is happening in the city of Oakmont, all the while as you struggle to keep your sanity. There are quite a few places to explore, cases to take on, and discovering all its secrets could take you a while. If you're looking for a game that doesn't spoon feed you the answers and are looking to challenge your investigative abilities, this one could be for you. While not perfect visually, with bugs here and there, gameplay is enjoyable and brings a mix of combat and deduction. Definitely worth the price tag.

When it comes to detective games, The Sinking City features some of the best gameplay that I've ever experienced in the genre.

The Sinking City is the best game when it comes to recreating the Cthulhu Myths so far and is without a doubt a great horror game and a fascinating detective RPG

Some issues hold me back from giving The Sinking City full marks, but I still recommend it. Whether you're a fan of Lovecraft, horror in general, or even a good old mystery, you may get a lot out of Frogware's latest. Just beware the call of Cthulhu.

Frogwares is a master in mystery. While their pedigree is mostly rooted in Sherlock Holmes, this foray into Lovecraftian horror is an admirable effort made even better by the technology of the PS5. Loading times are vastly improved on The Sinking City PS5, and the game looks better than it ever has before thanks to improved textures, lighting, and resolution. This version is also free of Frogwares' publisher drama with Nacon, and paints a pretty exciting picture for what the developer can do with mystery games on the PS5.

The Sinking City is a mixed bag; a riveting mystery that’s far less linear than anything Frogwares has ever done. It’s very rough around the edges however, likely to cause as much frustration as it does enjoyment.

I appreciate that the development team gave the player the second option. But, given the splash screen that begins the game, and Frogwares' clear understanding that they are dealing with a heated and contentious period of history, I question why they gave the player the first option.

The Sinking City has a fantastic story, atmosphere, and investigations, leading to something that feels genuinely unique. It's just a shame that it's brought down by an overabundance of crummy combat and glitches.

The Sinking City has its pros and cons but, if you're really into case solving and compelling stories this game won't dissappoint.

The Sinking City is a decent adaptation of Lovecraft's work, meshing dark themes with a variety of great investigations that culminate into tricky decisions. If the combat was less clunky and the world more polished, it would have beckoned all to its desolate shore.

The Sinking City, like most of Frogwares' other titles, offers a great concept with a somewhat poor execution. The severe lack of polish destroys the promising atmosphere, and some of the misguided gameplay elements can be annoying. If you're willing to look past that, however, then you get a very enjoyable investigative thriller in and of itself, even without those Lovecraftian elements.

Frogwares tried to merge a pure detective adventure game with horror action elements and the result is a fairly enjoyable title, although not very cohesive. Sometimes, less is more and the studio's ambitions were drowned in muddy waters just like the unfortunate city of Oakmont. Despite that, The Sinking City remains one of the better adventure games released this year.

Updated review - The Sinking City – PS5 Review https://chalgyr.com/2021/03/review-ps5-thesinkingcity.html So overall, The Sinking City's revamp on the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X is worthwhile if you've been thinking of giving this lovecraftian tale another go or had missed out on it the first time. With several upgrades and a new smoothness to the gameplay, going back for seconds alongside the added DLC was not a bad way to spend a few dozen hours. ---- Previous review - The Sinking City – PS4 Review https://chalgyr.com/2019/07/Review-PS4-TheSinkingCity.html So on a whole, while The Sinking City makes some great strides for investigative puzzlers, the open world that it tried to live in doesn’t really work. If you can get past the empty enough world and the clunky mechanics however, and there’s a gem underneath that is just begging to be explored and it’s worth the exploration.

As a gamer who loves detective games, I enjoyed playing The Sinking City despite all its issues. And if you're a big fan of Lovecraftian games, I recommend this game, because it is the best Lovecraft inspired game on the market. However, The Sinking City has lots of technical failings and some of gameplay mechanics are lacking quality. As much as the story and atmosphere are incredibly good, these issues are frustrating.

If sorting and resolving issues is one of your favorite past times, then The Sinking City is worth playing, but it’s a shame that this title is a bit stuck. At least the story and the solution of the issues are very well put together.
