Critic Reviews for Jamestown+

'Jamestown+' brings about the rebirth of the aging shoot-em-up genre by paying respect to its 16-bit heyday while throwing in a healthy dose of modern gaming flair.

Jamestown+ is another brilliant addition to the Nintendo Switch's ever-expanding library of excellent shmups.

For what it is, Jamestown+ is a fun game worth its asking price on the PlayStation Network. If anything, it's a fun little distraction calling back to the classic games of yesteryear. Fans of bullet hell certainly won't be disappointed.

Jamestown+ has a great foundation in that it's an extremely addictive and equally challenging shmup, whether you're playing alone or with friends. The inclusion of a store and some forced backtracking does take away from the experience, but at the end of the day, blowing stuff up is just so satisfying. Those who are able to get past its occasionally tedious attitude will find bullet hell bliss.

Final Form Games throws history out the window to create an action-packed shoot-em-up where 17th century colonists fight over Mars. This is a great looking game that will remind players of the genre's heyday in the 1990s. And with dozens of items to unlock and a wide variety of weapons to shoot, Jamestown+ will keep shoot-em-up fans happy for many hours to come.

Jamestown+ lands on the Nintendo Switch as one of the most fun shoot'em-ups of this generation and this conversion work is without a doubt a very competent one. The gameplay is frantic and addictive, the game's performance is up to what is expected and the cooperative mode does wonders. Those already familiar with the game, however, won't find a whole new amount of original content in this delivery.

All of this is wrapped up in a package that unites everything into that classic arcade experience the developers were aiming for when making Jamestown Plus. The amount of credits you have flashing at the bottom of the screen, your score rising above the millions, you and your friends dashing across the screen, and so many other little elements help make Jamestown Plus the game arcade-goers dreamed of back in the 90s.

It's about time someone came forth with a good "shmup" for this generation of consoles. Final Form Games takes everything good from the original Jamestown and ups the ante with more content and modes, including co-op support that's way more fun than it has every right being. If you're up for a challenge, or just want something different out of your shooters, make your residence in Jamestown.
