Layton's Mystery Journey (Deluxe Edition) Reviews
It’s an excellent ‘winding down before bed’ sort of game, and though it might not fully live up to the series legacy, we’re still excited for whatever Level-5 is planning next for Kat.
Level-5 brings the classic 3DS game back, with upgraded visuals and a great control adaptation for both TV and portable Switch modes. It offers plenty of puzzles and minigames, though some of them are confusing.

A welcome return for one of gaming's greatest puzzle franchises, and while it's not quite the best in the series it certainly has the most content.
Katrielle's adventure is one of the weaker entries in the Layton series, but it's still a decent low-stakes puzzler for Nintendo Switch owners.
Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and The Millionaires' Conspiracy – Deluxe Edition brings less to the Nintendo Switch than the length of its name might suggest. As a remaster of a previously released game, the biggest differences lie in the audiovisual element, but there are new puzzles featured in this version. It's not a very demanding game and doesn't overtake the most significant games in the Layton series but this is a charming and welcoming introduction for those who have never explored the world of these adventure & detective games.

Refined in every possible way, particularly through more practical puzzles, this Deluxe Edition proves a good introduction to the somehow lighthearted and acidulous investigations of Kat.

Layton’s Mystery Journey is a mixed bag of tricks and treats. There’s never a dull moment with the fantastic voice acting and clever script, but without an overarching narrative and below par puzzles, the game’s missing one of its largest draws. The Deluxe Edition for the Switch, though, has a truly unique experience in that it can be enjoyed by many in one fell swoop; a good addition to the family catalogue. For Katrielle, she’s not quite there yet.
If you find yourself craving some puzzles and English accents, Mystery Journey is a game you should look into picking up.
If you're looking for some charming brain teasers and puzzles to distract you from the current goings-on, give Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy a try.
While Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy – Deluxe Edition may not entice fans to return for a second play-through, it’s the best version available for anyone who hasn’t played it yet or is simply interested in the franchise.
The franchise certainly has a bright future, and a new home on the Nintendo Switch, remembering that it’s initial release was for the Nintendo3DS only excites me further to see what Level-5 could potentially develop for the hybrid handheld-home console. We could possibly see a revamp and brand new engine laid upon us for future installments, and that on it’s own certainly thrills me. The Professor Layton franchise will forever be one of the best puzzle-adventure franchises, and I certainly cannot recommend Layton’s Mystery Journey enough.
Whether you are a long time fan of the Layton games, or a series beginner, like myself, the Deluxe Edition of Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy is bursting at the brim with a plethora of content. The story is fun, the characters are charming and upbeat, the puzzles really get you questioning your IQ, and the experience is an overall enjoyable one.
Katrielle's first adventure was well transferred to the Nintendo Switch and extended with some nice extras, but is basically a disappointing Layton, which suffers from its weak story and fluctuating puzzle quality.

A warm welcome for the Layton franchise on Nintendo Switch
If you haven’t tried Layton before, you could do worse than giving Layton’s Mystery Journey a whirl, considering you’ll get at least a couple dozen hours out of the experience. But if you’ve already played through Katrielle’s quest once, then this is a port that you can safely skip over.
