2026's Game of the Year race has officially begun. Mewgenics came out of the blocks firing with a score of 88 on Metacritic, and just two weeks later, the hotly anticipated Resident Evil Requiem comfortably matched that, in the process becoming the highest-rated original game in the series in over 20 years.

While critics' reviews may have dropped before the game released, Requiem has now been in the hands of the public for a few days, and during that time, players have begun to form their own opinions, reviewing the game for themselves. Clearly, they're enjoying it. As of Monday, February 2, with over 2,250 reviews, Requiem is currently the highest user-reviewed game in Metacritic history.

Resident Evil Requiem's 88 on Metacritic is no small feat, making it the best reviewed new game in the series since 2005's Resident Evil 4. We scored the game a 4/5 here at TheGamer, saying, "Leon Kennedy and Grace Ashcroft engage in a delicate dance where all of their complicated steps work together in relative harmony despite some minor missteps." This critical sentiment has clearly directly translated to fans too.
