After barely over a month, the official Highguard account has confirmed that the game is going to shut down forever next week on March 12.
Not counting its eternal comparison point Concord, there hasn't been a game that's suffered as tragic a fate as Highguard in quite some time. Originally revealed as the final announcement of last year's The Game Awards showcase, Highguard was brutally mocked by pretty much everyone as being a disappointing showstopper.
Things didn't get much better from there, as Highguard launched to some very mixed reviews and its playercount (which was mostly comprised of people seeing what the fuss was about) quickly plummeted. After a recent string of layoffs, it seemed inevitable that the game would be shut down soon, and that's exactly what's happening.
Over on Twitter, the official Highguard account confirmed that its final update, which will also shut the game down forever, is going to happen next week on March 12. The message thanks those who played the game and "believed in what we were building", while pointing out that over two million players ended up giving Highguard a try.
