Whenever a studio announces a new horror game based on a beloved IP, there's a lot of trepidation, because usually it turns out to be another asymmetrical title. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Killer Klowns from Outer Space are among the best to do it, sure, but these kinds of games are always entering the genre already on their third hook. You just can't compete with Dead by Daylight, and Behavior Interactive knows it.

In an interview with GamesRadar+ at this year's Game Developers Conference, head of partnership Mathieu Cote joked that "they're not good enough," and even if that were true (which it isn't — post-launch woes aside, Texas Chain Saw was brilliant), the problems run much deeper. One IP is too limiting, and to let creative director Dave Richard say it, "We were there first."

Like with all the hero shooters and battle royales trying to compete with Overwatch and Fortnite, the asymmetrical horror genre is incredibly difficult to break into because you need to pull people away from Dead by Daylight and all of the time and money sunk into Behavior Interactive's horror sandbox. One IP will never measure up, because there's only so many cosmetics...
