The ongoing scarcity of physical memory is having knock-on effects on the gaming industry, as console manufacturers such as Nintendo grapple with increasing production costs.
An industry analyst, MST Financial's David Gisbon, predicted that the memory shortage is also going to delay the release of the next console generation, specifically the PlayStation 6. According to Gibson, the PS5's life cycle will be extended as Sony waits for memory prices to fall.
The price of memory has increased because of the proliferation of generative artificial intelligence. The data centres that power this technology require obscene amounts of memory, which has created a worldwide shortage. The amount of resources required for generative AI to function is one of the main concerns the industry faces, along with the technology being completely useless and inferior for most of its supposed use cases.
However, in a recent interview with The Game Business, Take-Two head Strauss Zelnick expressed the opposite opinion.
