Liverpool-based studio Firesprite has been mired in problems since it was acquired by PlayStation in 2021, with reports suggesting that crunch was mandated to finish development on Horizon Call of The Mountain, and that a live-service Twisted Metal game was canceled amid wider layoffs at Sony.
According to Eurogamer, these problems compounded into a mass exodus of talent, including all but one of the studio's co-founders. New leadership was brought in from the XDev support studio to get things back on course, but allegations were raised against them of sexual discrimination and ageism. Sony, however, dismissed these claims as a "misunderstanding."
Now, two years later, a new investigation by MP1st has uncovered that Firesprite's turmoil extends further back than previously thought, as two projects — a new sci-fi horror IP, and a Breaking Bad VR game — were canceled ahead of the acquisition.
According to this new report, the Breaking Bad game was in development for the PSVR between 2017 and 2018, and is described as a narrative "experience" similar to the Stranger Things tie-in VR game.
