Baldur's Gate 3 is the threequel that just can't stop, won't stop, all the way to the bank. In the trio of years since its early access exit, Larian Studios' modern classic has eclipsed the 20-million mark, and with the way folks keep talking about it, 25 million seems like a lifetime minimum expectation at this point.
But what if there was a bizarro world in which Baldur's Gate 3 never existed? Oh, to be sure, the early access phase might well have popped off. But an actual full-product launch? No, that would not be possible. This is where we all get to thank the game's reputation system for existing.
BG3 has gotten meaty update after meaty update, which has lent to GOTY-winning WRPG a sense of unending. Over time, however, the cadence of updates will slow, and one of this generation's greatest video games will be content-complete. We're pretty close as-is. Many things are so fundamentally enmeshed in Baldur's Gate 3's DNA, though, that they can't be stripped out for spare parts and replaced with each passing update. The core of combat; the primary visuals; the reputation system.
