My Lovey-Dovey Demon may not be, in my opinion, one of the best ebi-hime works but it has some strong points and accomplishes its purpose of an unpretentious and cute plot within the romcom genre. However, the fact it doesn't develop into something more complex at some moments turns the reading into a tiresome, monotonous effort, making the visual novel a niche, limited recommendation.

Momodora: Moonlit Farewell is a lean and focused metroidvania that offers a satisfying experience, but the lackluster execution makes this goodbye more ephemeral than it should be.

6 / 10.0 - Ninja Issen
Jan 13, 2024

Despite the criticisms in this text, it's possible to notice the good intentions and notable developer care in Ninja Issen. Considering it's a solo work, the game is competent and offers fun sometimes. However, it's clear the title needs more polishing time as the bugs really compromise the experience.

8 / 10.0 - SHINORUBI
Jan 12, 2024

Shinorubi's greatest merit is in breaking a nostalgic mold that limits the full potential that shoot 'em ups can achieve in current generations of games. The different game modes are also very welcome, and the different ships not only in terms of shooting, but also in size, add a differentiating factor. If there were a greater variety between environments and scenarios, this title would have everything to mark its name as an example to be followed for future projects.

With Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, Ubisoft Montpellier used the solid terrain of the metroidvania legacy to bring new air to the classic series. Even without innovating, the game is built with the good parts of the genre, a confident and excellently executed combination that takes us to a robust, fun and challenging campaign, making it a highlight as one of the best of its kind.

Uchikano - Living With My Lovers is a simple visual novel but it manages to deliver exactly what it sets out to do with quality. It's a story about people that end up creating a home together and it respects the humanity of its characters with the many detail layers. With a lighthearted and fun plot, it's a pleasant read and an easy recommendation for someone looking for a simple entry in the genre.

Warhammer 40k: Rogue Trader does not fail to be a great CRPG with the best features of its genre, even more so being a great gateway for those who want to know more about this rich, chaotic and fascinating universe. Perhaps my biggest problem with it was its dry presentation with few cutscenes, lack of animations and lack of a cinematic feeling that enriches all the good writing of a good RPG.

6.5 / 10.0 - Loot River
Dec 28, 2023

Loot River, with its unique approach, offers an attractive concept, especially for challenge and puzzle enthusiasts. However, issues related to combat and the game's price on PlayStation consoles may be factors to consider when deciding to try this labyrinthine journey on Sony consoles.

8 / 10.0 - Trinity Fusion
Dec 22, 2023

Trinity Fusion uses the basics of roguelike to create a fun and dynamic adventure, with agile combat and a considerable variety of weapons and abilities. It doesn't innovate, far from it, and leaves something to be desired in terms of the structure of its stages, but the experience proved to be very enjoyable for fans of the genre.

We have a lot of platform titles, even more so these days, yet Raccoo Venture manages to stand out with charisma and personality, to the point of being able to bring several references and maintain its uniqueness. 8 / 10.0 - Cookie Cutter
Dec 21, 2023

Fulfilling the promise of elaborate traditional animations, Cookie Cutter aims at the target of the metroidvania formula without the intention of innovating it. It's a precise, debauched and bloody hit, without a doubt, but it still leaves the feeling that the adventure and the songs are not in the same rebellious tone as the vigorous personality displayed by the protagonist in her fluid and brutal movements.

Thus, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is what one would expect of a soulless licensed game on the PlayStation 2/early-PlayStation 3 era. The main different is the monetary correction of inflation, updated to what one would expect to pay for an open world title in the current industry.

GranBlue Fantasy Versus: Rising made sure to perfect the main aspect, its combat system, in a way that changed completely the series' look and is a good choice for its diversified and well-rounded cast. Sadly, the previous extras, which were big attractions too, were reduced to mere decorations, which is a sin with such a rich creative source to use.

Even with some mechanics that make gameplay more difficult, Laika: Aged Through Blood leaves a trail of intense emotions as you maneuver a motorcycle through the desert against a relentless army. The contrast between the raw violence and the beauty of the designed scenarios and, especially, the songs with vocals, converges to the representation of human tragedies in the fight for survival in this unique, bloody and beautifully melancholic metroidvania.

8 / 10.0 - Rising Dusk
Dec 12, 2023

Rising Dusk treads its own 2D platformer beats with a fresh perspective on the collectible coins that have populated the genre for decades. The execution is as good as the idea, and the concept of “anti-currencies” is used to create intuitive puzzles and replayability through secrets, secondary paths and alternative exits. The visuals may not attract attention, but the lo-fi songs take a calming beat to drive a campaign with a flexible structure that will please fans of 2D games.

8.5 / 10.0 - Backpack Hero
Dec 8, 2023

Backpack Hero immerses players in a nostalgic experience, with its pixelated aesthetic and soundtrack that evokes the days of classic consoles. The simple gameplay hides an intriguing complexity in the inventory organization mechanics, making each choice crucial to success in the dungeons. However, some details, such as the frequent need to consult the glossary and the lack of a more robust progress tracking system, can make the experience a little stiff, but without compromising our enjoyment of the game.

It's a crime to divide the IREM classics in five tiny compilations, and IREM Collection Volume 1 unfortunately gets a blow that its next parts will also get. Besides the structural issues, the way these games are rereleased ends up eclipsing how fun they could be as a single package.
