I got a story as confident as it is weird. I got a cast of characters with blistering charm. I got an experience that moved from the stuff of nightmares to the stuff of dreams - weird, haunting, and maybe a little deeper than I originally gave it credit for. I got a Resident Evil game. And it might be one of the best so far.

Resident Evil Village is both the eighth mainline entry in the long running franchise and also marks the license’s 25th anniversary, and what a fitting celebration it is. From bringing back fan favourite characters to introducing new and memorable ones; taking players to supernatural-laden and ravaged locales that have been pulled straight out of fairy tales, and even giving players who do not play horror games a good entry point; Resident Evil Village does not disappoint. There is simply so much to do, players will likely jump right back in with a New Game Plus not long after the credits have rolled and the twists have been realised. Sadly the game feels much shorter than it rightfully needs to be, but this is only thanks to the subject material at hand – which players will certainly see more of in downloadable content down the road. There is no other way to say it: the game is, truly, very good.

After stepping away for a day, after beating Village, it has become one of my favorite Resident Evil titles and I hope whoever reads this picks up a copy and enjoys it.

To wrap-up then, Resident Evil Village is a fun game to play for those looking for a less scary experience and one that is not too taxing on the grey matter. It feels like Resident Evil 4 revisited and works using a similar style of gameplay. Fans of the slower-paced survival horror games might feel like this game could quite easily have had its own spin-off series and in some ways we can agree with that sentiment. However, in its own right and for all its theatrics, Village pushes the right buttons where it counts. In many ways it’s liberating to reside on the side of aggressor rather than tortured weakling, and that gets a dismembered thumbs-up from us.

Overall, Resident Evil Village is a fantastic entry in this beloved series. While the game leans in on the monster mash theme, it creates a big experience that delivers plenty of thrills. There’s tons of scares, action, insanity, and multiple surprises in store for fans.

In trying to capture the best of both worlds, Resident Evil Village is a game of two halves. And they are equally hindered by their jarring differences and incompatible foundations.

‎After the seventh listed installment of the saga is responsible for renewing it in excellence, Resident Evil 8 Village arrives to fully refine the formula. As a continuation and as an independent title, Ethan Winters' last voyage is an exceptional work and, at the same time, loaths to be part of all the discussions about the best games of 2021 thanks to a proposal that combines nostalgia and novelty in perfectly equal parts.‎

Resident Evil Village is a masterpiece, it is the evolution in all aspects of its previous chapter. It has been able to take advantage of the aspects that most enamored its community with the old titles and has managed to implement them in a first-person title.

While Village doesn’t reinvent the wheel in the way its predecessor did, it serves as an important stabilizer for the series. It puts Resident Evil on steady ground for the future—one I can’t wait to see.

Resident Evil Village was a joy to play with lots of fun callbacks to past entries regarding gameplay. It feels like a good mix of everything that makes the series great and still truly terrifies. The Duke and his upgrading system made me search every nook and cranny despite how scared I was, and I can’t wait to jump back into this world. There are tons of reasons to replay thanks to all the difficulty options, new weapons and modes, and a plethora of difficulty options. Unfortunately, the story isn’t the most compelling in the series, but a fantastic setting and great atmosphere make up for those shortcomings. Resident Evil Village is a must-play for anyone who likes Resident Evil, or just horror in general.

Resident Evil Village is a decent entry into a franchise that continues to wildly swing back and forth, stumbling into success and failure, unsure of what it even wants to be.

Resident Evil manages to prove once again that its DNA is not static, and that it has the ability to evolve in the same way as the viruses and biological weapons that its protagonists have fought for so many years. In more ways than one, Resident Evil Village is a huge tribute to 25 years of tradition, and an important stepping stone to its future.

Resident Evil Village is finally here in the series’ 8th incarnation. The formula has matured since the days of tank controls. Yet survival horror, is a genre that was defined by Capcom 25 years ago and refined ever since, offering an experience imitated by many and replicated by none.

Resident Evil Village sticks to the series roots and hooks while providing a refined and fun spin to survival horror. It is also an incredibly polished title, visually and gameplay-wise. With that said, I advise turning off camera acceleration and adjusting camera speed to get a more smoother experience. I do wish Capcom would let us adjust the FOV as well for little more spatial awareness. The game’s initial hours took a bit to get settled in. It also did not make me substantially like Ethan any more than I did in RE7. However, my complaints do not outweigh the full, unforgettable experience Village gave me. I am more excited than I have ever been for the story direction. Where characters are left off and how that will carry over into a not yet announced Resident Evil 9 has me invested. Resident Evil Village is sitting pretty as one of the best games in the series and of 2021. It is absolutely a different experience than the intimacy of RE7. But it is all for the better since that DNA is not lost, but added to.

Overall Resident Evil Village is a fantastic entry into the realm of Resident Evil. It continues the storyline, it causes more questions than it answers, it allows for future entries to pick up from both the pre and post credits, and it was fun. Do I wish that Ethan Winters had more personality like our once again returning Chris Redfield? Yes. Was it enough to take me away from the gorgeous mountain views and the terrifying creepy haunted mansion on a hill? No, it sadly wasn’t and I really never want to see that house again!

Village is an incredibly enjoyable experience and can easily be finished in a couple of sittings (or one big one) depending on how well you can handle scares and puzzle solving. It’s art direction, environment and puzzle design highlights the best the series has to offer and there’s also plenty of replayability options as you’ll undoubtedly find things on subsequent playthroughs you may have missed or not had the items to solve the first time through. And the mercenaries and upcoming RE:Verse mode give players plenty to do (and come back to) even after clearing the main story Village has on offer.
